For many Americans, prom is a rite of passage. The guy asks the girl to be his date, they get dressed up, pose for cute pictures in expensive gowns and tuxes, and maybe, just maybe, get into a little trouble later on. But this is hardly the scene at Michigan's Hamtramck High School. Because Hamtramck just held its first all-girl prom.

The prom was all-girls mainly because many of the students at the school are Muslim, so they cannot date, dance with boys or appear without a head scarf in front of males, The New York Times reports. The girls decided to party anyway ... and non-Muslim girls showed up, too. "I want to support all my girls," Sylwia Stanko told the Times. "I know how important it is to them."

This may sound lame to you, but Gurl.com thinks it's a great idea. "During my junior year, I went to prom with a big group of girls -- and I have to say, it was the most fun ever," she writes. And she loves that the non-Muslim girls got all dressed up for the dance, too. "Even though these girls could totally go to the regular prom and dance with guys, they showed up at the one that was for girls only just so they could let loose with their best girlfriends." Ladies, would you attend an all-girls prom? Guys, how do you feel about being excluded?

I'm all for cultural sensitivity, but the question is not "Would you think all-girl proms were fun if you were a Muslim girl?" I think sports are lame; that doesn't mean I lack respect for people who enjoy them. So cool your jets.

No, it's lame to those of us who like having a prom date of the opposite sex. Or, in the case of gay guys, the same sex.

Muslim's enjoy it? Yay. Personally, I like my date to be male.

Considering that the Muslim vote is pretty split (It was like 50% fun and 40% lame according to the lightning report)...

I personally have no problem its just that balls are just so much better when everyone and anyone is welcome (provided they went to that school or had a date from that school.) For me anyway.

All girl balls are fine if thats what they want, but I hope they have a seperate co-ed ball for the rest.

it's more about having fun together... if there was an all-guys prom i would refuse to go (as would most guys probably), so the school is effectively denying a prom to half the school. also, what's to stop them having an after-party that has mixed gender?

The Muslim girls should be allowed to have at least one time where they have fun even if it's in a stricter setting than what the normal prom would be like. In the end, isn't it more about allowing them to have this one small freedom/fun time than whether there were guys there or not? I have the funny feeling that a lot of people who are calling this extra prom "lame" because of the expectation of having sex at the end of the prom - which a lot of teenagers do.

I voted lame and I'm a virgin.

I think we'd just prefer co-ed really, its what we're used to. But you know if thats what they want then they should go ahead, so as long as there's a ball for the people who want co-ed.

I understand its their religion. But any dance without boys there would be lame.. I get along better with guys then girls, so that makes almost my entire group of friends guys. So to me that's pretty lame.

Wrong about that: America was founded on a 'freedom of religion' basis. There are no references to Jesus in the Constitution. In our country, they are free to celebrate their principals and not be criticized by others.
