For many Americans, prom is a rite of passage. The guy asks the girl to be his date, they get dressed up, pose for cute pictures in expensive gowns and tuxes, and maybe, just maybe, get into a little trouble later on. But this is hardly the scene at Michigan's Hamtramck High School. Because Hamtramck just held its first all-girl prom.

The prom was all-girls mainly because many of the students at the school are Muslim, so they cannot date, dance with boys or appear without a head scarf in front of males, The New York Times reports. The girls decided to party anyway ... and non-Muslim girls showed up, too. "I want to support all my girls," Sylwia Stanko told the Times. "I know how important it is to them."
This may sound lame to you, but Gurl.com thinks it's a great idea. "During my junior year, I went to prom with a big group of girls -- and I have to say, it was the most fun ever," she writes. And she loves that the non-Muslim girls got all dressed up for the dance, too. "Even though these girls could totally go to the regular prom and dance with guys, they showed up at the one that was for girls only just so they could let loose with their best girlfriends." Ladies, would you attend an all-girls prom? Guys, how do you feel about being excluded?

- Joseph Mallery 2012/06/08 10:22:08LameThey are encouraging sexism by bringing this about, If I was an islamic girl, I would break the rules because good people break bad rules. Also, an all-girl prom implies a lesbian relationship, and I bet that's worse to muslims than a straight relationship.reply
- kaykay 2012/05/30 22:45:15LameIt's def. more fun with the boys as long as they aren't grinding on youreply
- kaykay kaykay 2012/05/30 22:47:23
I mean as long as we arent getting in trouble and doing things against religious beliefsreply - AstroZombie 2012/05/26 19:03:06FunIn this instance, I think it's a great idea.reply
- MickPrice 2012/05/24 00:56:18LameYes I understand the cultural reasons, basically they don't want girls and guys actually talking and interacting, like they do every day, because otherwise girls might make their own decisions on what to do about the boys.reply
- VintageLys 2012/05/23 00:50:35FunI meant LAMEreply
- Lorin Morgan 2012/05/13 03:14:13Funthere will probably be way less pressure and girls will probably have less of an act and be less try-hard (i dont mean to offend anyone though, who is friends with a guy)reply

- Playerazzi 2012/05/07 08:31:46FunA prom is for girls, anyway. There's nothing in it for the guys.reply
- barby karring 2012/05/07 03:46:27FunThe girls only prom sound like fun; considering there were two proms held. Females have a lot of things to share informationwise with each other. They discuss future plans about their life after highschool; so a second prom that the ladies own is cool!reply
- sally 2012/05/07 03:05:55LameI understand that the girls of this school have a good reason but personally I wouldn't care. As long as my friends (girls or guys) are there with me I'd have a blast.reply
- Seeker of Truth - War Wizard 2012/05/07 02:02:37Lame+1The school should not be catering to a religion. The social norm in this country is for boys and girls to date, dance, and be friends. If some (or even most) of the students are not allowed to do that due to their religion or family rules, that's not the school's problem. If those students wanted to get together privately and organize a girls-only event, then that's up to them. But the school should not pay for it.reply
- clasact 2012/05/06 12:54:46LameThis is America not the mid east keep your rules and way over there and we will keep ours thank youreply
- SilveryRow 2012/05/06 10:52:41LameAlthough props to Hamtramck for accommodating the needs of another religion.reply
- Skar 2012/05/06 08:58:11LameDidn't really sound like fun based solely on the headline. Didn't realize it was for Muslim girls. Based on how women are treated in their culture this may actually be much more fun for them. It's sad that in this day and age woman are still treated so poorly that they have to exclude themselves like this. It's amazing that we've lasted this long as a species.reply
- overseanancy 2012/05/06 05:12:07FunIt can be both depending on how you spent your time...lol. Hope these girls have a good timereply
- ceci 2012/05/06 03:10:26LameI don't know. Dances are fun with just you and your friends, but prom is supposed to be romantic...i think...reply
- Catnip 2012/05/06 00:37:39FunI would soooo have crashed that prom!reply
- GLaDOS 2012/05/05 16:55:55LameHELL no, I wouldn't, personally go to an all-girl prom. I do not enjoy that variety of clam bakes, thank you very much. I would much rather have someone I can slow dance with, who is solid, and doesn't have a couple of pillows I can lay my head on while doing so.reply
- Rukasaki ~~ Hawkshadow 2012/05/05 16:52:39Lame+2i much enjoyed having a guy to slow-dance with :)reply
- Ameera 2012/05/05 15:28:26Funwe had both types of proms in our school so it was fun :)reply
- barby k... Ameera 2012/05/06 09:59:13
For them, where are the guys?reply - Ameera barby k... 2012/05/06 16:39:21
the guys only had one prom, the mixed one. girls have two proms the mixed one and the girls only onereply - barby k... Ameera 2012/05/07 03:52:47
Intetesting...though it sounds like fun"reply - miss 2012/05/05 15:28:15Lame+1actually its both, because for one if all your friends have dates and you don't it removes the the low self confidence level and no drama. But then I would like to spend time with my boyfriend or something like that at prom not just my best friends, which come to think of it are guys so that's another issue. If all your friends are guys then you end up alone at an all girl prom. But then there is also the issue of religion so its both really.reply
- yasmin 2012/05/05 13:55:56FunI think people should just get along and mind their own business I myself am a Muslim and I think it's great ideareply

- strawberry 2012/05/05 04:45:43LameAll girl proms sound like a real bore. I can understand Lesbians going to a prom together, but come on where do you find an all girl prom at any high school, even an all girl's high school. I guess for these Muslim girls it was a treat just to get dressed up fancy.reply
- Evelyn 2012/05/05 04:32:03LameSo, they get a prom. Then, they turn lesbian. THEN the boys turn gay becuase the girls are lesbian. Whewreply
- serena moon 2012/05/05 04:16:49Funyes maybe its cultural but is one of last thing you are going to do before becoming an adult,so why not have fun but good funreply
- Cornball 2012/05/05 03:54:16 (edited)LameIf this isn't an all girls school, then mega-lame. So the girls get their own special prom, but the boys get no prom? Someone tell me I misread. -.-reply
- Eva Cornball 2012/05/05 14:28:18
You misread. It also said the non-Muslim girls could have gone to the regular prom-- which means there was a prom for the guys too.reply - Cornball Eva 2012/05/10 19:26:21
+1Oh, that's much better. Thanks.reply
