Archaeologist finds oldest rock art in Australia made 28,000 years ago, How come humans evolved to create and enjoy art?

bob 2012/06/20 21:28:04
The oldest known rock art is in Spain, where hand stencils and red disks made by blowing paint on to the wall in El Castillo cave are at least 40,800 years old, according to scientists using a technique known as uranium-thorium dating.
Humans evolved to create and enjoy art …..
Humans did not evolve, science is a fraud
Though out our many lives and as our form evolved so did our souls to create and enjoy art
As we evolved to create and enjoy art, may we learn to be good tenants of our home the earth

Science is not a fraud, science is the study and observation of the world today. We can look at facts today and use those facts to support our world view, and the same fact can in some cases be used by both sides. It all depends where you start. If you believe there is a God, you will look at the facts accordingly. Vice versa, if you choose not to believe in God, then you will look at the facts that way.

A good way to communicate with a lot of other people would be a contributing factor.

Although it is romantic to try to believe the cavemen were creating "art", could it be, more so, a form of trying to convey a message? And that we are calling it "art"?

What exactly IS art, other than a way of conveying "messages" of various sorts??? In fact, any form of expression that does effectively convey at least one message, can rightlfully be called "art" in one form or another: even something like good conversation is an art-form.... and the creations of the cave-people most certainly are artistic, whatever the message(s) they intended to convey through their various offerings.

I believe in creation, not evolution.

How exactly have the scientists figured out a way to date rock-an inorganic material-going back 40,000 yrs? And if that was the case, that would throw out all the other so-called dating they've made on the bones.

Anyway, art is a creative expression, in music, or an unlimited array, which I believe God shared this ability with us, from Him, since He's the creator.

Creation IS supported by science-plenty of scientists believe in creation. Sir Isaac Newton, famous for his law of gravity, was a theologian, who wrote volumnes on creation & the Bible. The most renouned chemist in Germany-a friend of Einstein-converted to Christianity, believing the Bible.
Today, I personally know 2 top physicists who teach evolution refutation.

Those are facts, not fairy tales.

Art is a sensual reaction to our environment. We imitate and reproduce what we see or hear; later we create and enjoy our own sounds and sights.

There are many theories, but the one I believe in is the adaptive functions that the arts have in human evolution.
The arts contribute to problem-solving and making better adaptive choices.
The arts are used to manipulate, deceive, indoctrinate, or control other people.
The arts promote mating opportunity through display of desirable qualities (e.g., physical beauty, intelligence, creativity, prestige).
The arts enhance cooperation and contribute to social cohesion and continuity.

    Who says its art?
Originally it could have been a way to communicate to the next people that occupy the area that the hunting was great.(i.e. a picture of someone throwing a spear at a bison)

The first statement is a little off in my view, the cave paintings in France and Spain are probably only 37,000 years old. Be that as it may it is safe to guess that cave and overhang art has been in the world longer than 40,000 years but has not been found yet. They have also found paintings of very large birds in Australia that seem to have gone extinct well over 40,000 years ago, so this 28,000 year statement is probably not the oldest. Overhang art found in Africa is in all probability the oldest, but dating of the earliest rock paintings and engravings in Africa is uncertain at best. Direct dating techniques are not advanced enough to accurately indicate an age for them due to their being in the open and subject to the weather and environmental conditions. The art form has to predate the Great Diaspora out of Africa, but it has not been found or overlooked at present. There are some that suggest that Rock painting could be as much as 70,000 years old. Is it possible that genetically we must create art? Look back to your own childhood and seeing animals, ships and even people in the clouds. Is "seeing" images in clouds itself a work of art? The viewer's brain is constructing a representational image out of blobs of water vapor. Is that so different from painting images o...

The viewer's brain is constructing a representational image out of blobs of water vapor. Is that so different from painting images on a wall or assembling a statue for blobs of clay? What an artist essentially does is take materials paints, in this case and encodes them into a work of art. The later people seeing these decode those works and give meaning to the artists work.

Tied together with the use of symbols to communicate and to replicate what was and had been observed. As can be observed from a progression, man attempted to improve the likeness of these symbols over time. Thus an eventual appreciation for the art form, as it progressed from reality to the abstract as it was no longer really required for communicating .

Not Homo Sapiens thou. They were an earlier form of homonid and no rock art found there. Our species is only a couple hundred thousand years old.

I gave up on taxonomy years ago. Everytime you seem to get it right in your head they move the species around and your back at square one.

Yes Homo Sapiens and Homo Habilis are in the Hominid Family along with many other primates but I wouldn't regard them as human as we are two distinct species. I would want more than their ability to make rudimentary stone tools. Australopithecus garhi have been found with tools near them and they date back a few hundred thousand years before Homo Habilis.
