When users outnumber producers, we become just like the Soviet Union. Uniformly poor with no incentive to improve our lot.

I work in healthcare and personally I see a lot of people on disability that aren't to sick to work they just don't want to make a lifestyle change to stay healthy enough for it.

A good sign if you are a progressive liberal.

A bad sign if you are a Capitalist, hard working tax paying conservative.

capitalists don't work hard. They get rich offshoring jobs. They don't care about the disabled since they pay little to no tax anyway.

No, it's a sign of people applying for disability when they're too sick to work or handicapped or whatever and got laid off their jobs because of it.

I am just one person, and I know many people on disability who are certainly well enough to work. And have handicap stickers that keep them from doing the walking that would improve their health. These are persons I observe more than once a week.

I simply don't know how we are going to pay for all these people to have disability!

If you can't find honest work, you get depressed. When you become chronically depressed, you qualify for disability. Funny how that works, isn't it? When I worked, if someone knew they were close to being laid off or fired, they jumped on the old disability train for 'stress'. ( Stress - something the company can neither prove or disprove.) Worked like a charm, too.

Where I live one CANNOT even turn in paperwork for disability until they have been out of work for exactly 1 year.

Then I was denied disability three times before I was accepted. I have Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy and Arthritis and worked WITH these disabilities for years.

About a year and a half went by before I received my first check.

Where I worked, if you chose to pursue it, you would have been on permanent disability after 26 weeks of regular disability through the company.

I commend you for working with disabilities as many would not and am sorry you had such a horrendous time getting the benefits you clearly qualify for.

There must have been recent changes according to this link, updated in April. There is now a 5 month waiting period and benefits begin the 6th month.
