I think the teachers should be tested before the school year begins every year to be sure that they are even able to teach the courses that they teach. They should teach more and stop being picky about the small stuff like at my son's school. They get in trouble if they touch other students (touch as in a friendly hug) another is they get written up if they disrespect their peers ( they get detension after school) I mean come on what is the real problem here teachers don't know how to handle their students so what is the next step put your children on RX so I can teach the class. Excuse me if you as a teacher can not take the heat get out of the fucken kitchen. So long story short my child stays in trouble for being a kid. What the hell does that mean? I was a child once and I would act up from time to time but I grew out of it. There was no such thing as ADD back when I was a child and I say Thank the lord because I was able to be a kid. I turned out to be a great adult. I say teachers that don't want to teach should really go looking for another type of job where they will never have to be around children again for the rest of their lives. Let children be children.Sheesh.

The far right and their biblical teachings nonsense have dumbed down and continue to dumb down our children. The NCLB nonsense coupled with 'intelligent design' in schools has made the US a laughing stock of the world. IT is time to get the bible and its worthless untruths out of our school and back into the churches where they belong.

We have some great teachers and we also have some that are teaching their own agendas. I also know that a lot of parents these days expect the schools to teach their children manners ,respect and all the things the parents should be teaching the kids before they get to school. Some kids dont even know their ABC'S before they get to school or have had a book read to them.

I work with teachers who think students are there to be turned into their own little political time bombs.... but the truth is a parent's job isn't just educating at home before kids start school its a parents job to be IN the schools making sure education is staying on tract and complaining loudly when its not.

The more teh public is involved in the schools the betterteh schools are no matter who is teaching in them or even how much money is flowing... my last principal said to me (and this is a quote) "if teh public knew what was happening [in school] the lid would blow off the place. We don't want the public sticking their nose in here, watching us"

I agree. Parents must get involved. Example, my sons teacher who was black was teaching how terrible the white man was concerning slavery. She was telling the kids that the white man would pull his ship up to the beach and tell the Africans that they wanted to trade blankets and clothing for food and then they would trap them when they were onboard and sail away with them shackled in chains. I had a conference with this teacher with the principle present. I said if youre going to teach it then tell the truth. The Africans sold other Africans to the slave traders. This was not what she wanted to hear and there was a big fuss in the office. The principle also told her to teach the truth but she kept right on. My son knew the truth and did what he had to do to pass the class. He was in the 7th grade at the time.

I am sure everyone could give examples like yours IF they were in the schools. I try and incourage everyone from the public to take an hour and walk into a school and tell them they want to observe a class for a while.

I have had people walk into classrooms where the teacher was playing computer games while the students were doing anything but learning and they come back to me and say "I just didn't know".

With less than 40% of parents showing up for conferences and even few asking their child on a daily basis what happened in school that day... well its no wonder schools are off the rails. Makes those of us who love our jobs and love education feel like its a losing battle....

There are some very very good teachers out there. When a kid see's their parents dont care about going to the conferences and meeting the teachers and dont ask about their day at school it makes them think that school is not important. When a kid see's that their parents do care it makes all the difference in the world.

It all starts at home. We also need to get rid of the Unions in schools. When you know you have a bad teacher and you cant fire them then it hurts everybody. Especially the children.

I guess I don't think of it that way because that really isn't much of an issue where I live. Also we have government funded support like OT and Speech for kids with Autism, ADD, ADHD, etc.

What do hi-tech companies do every day? Plead, beg, grovel at the govt to allow them to bring in people from abroad to do their top scientific jobs because we don't produce the candidates in enough quantities here at home. And what do we do? Kow-tow to those who hate immigrants even if they're smarter than most people on the planet.

With schools these days including a lot more classes and opportunities for those who chose to take advantage of these opportunities like taking college classes while in high school and advanced computer and technology classes that are offered at most high schools our youth will be prepared for the 21st century and the 22nd century.

It's not only the public schools. I know some people that came out of church schools that aren't ready for the real world. They have quit teaching cursive in a lot of TX schools, a lot of the math and science classes are a joke. I fear for the future of our kids, or in my case, great grandkids. No one knows what constitutes a nutritious meal or how to cook it, raise plants, or construct anything.

I agree with some that it is how much the student want to learn that affects how much they will learn not so much the schools

But I know that public schools are not encouraging the students enough!
we need to emphasize on education not sports or other activities

when have you seen the president or NASA people doing jumping jacks?
