American Apparel, known for its provocative hipster ad campaigns, recently released a new advertisement featuring an "advanced" model... spreading her legs. They've garnered a lot of positive feedback from the media for being equal opportunity, but is this just another controversial marketing ploy?

American Apparel is a classless company run by a sexist pervert who creeps on his young and beautiful models. Basically he uses the lewd ads as an excuse to proposition young women for sex- they are coerced into it. I refuse to purchase anything from this horrible company. Also, the stores refuse to hire employees (even those who work in the backroom of the store!) who don't meet certain physical specifications. Purchasing from thrift stores and local independent boutiques is smarter than shopping at this overpriced sleazefest.

I don't care what tactics this company uses- it is still disgusting to me, therefore I refuse to patronize it.

    [...]

The ad would be fine if her sweater were covering most of her crotch, otherwise it echoes the rest of the company's tasteless advertisements.

What makes them think that this would appeal to the "boomer" market? I guess bad taste is not restricted to any one generation.

I guess marketing must think that seniors are impulse buyers, wrong. We are the consumer reports type generation. They need to re-evaluate that kind of nonsense. Maybe that is great for the Duh generation but not for ours.

And not a particularly attractive one. I have to think both the model and the photographer will not be including this in their resumes.

    It's a crappy picture.
    They're crappy clothes.
    It's a crappy campaign.
But older people wear crappy clothes too, not just young people. Why the hell shouldn't companies market to everyone? Every one deserves the equal opportunity to rip off & to be ripped off.

Older models have been modelling for many years so it's not a marketing ploy. I guess they feel that if the younger models can pose in provocative position so can someone older, equal opportunity. It's not in good taste though.

Both. It's equal opportunity used as a marketing ploy. Anything in marketing is a marketing ploy. Especially because of those clothes and that pose.

Of Course it's Equal Opportunity/Marketing Ploy how ever I think it could have been accomplished in a far more tasteful and meaningful way. AND YES @Art and @Katherine it is creepy on so many different levels.

Oh yes they are. Just watch the infomercials on weekend and late night TV. People will buy anything if you 1-cause them to think it'll do what the consumer wants, and 2-price it correctly. Think Pet Rock. OK, that's an exception to rule 1 above, but hey, a Pet Rock!

Of course it's a marketing ploy, but it's an equal opportunity marketing ploy. Besides, I think granny is pretty hot...of course she's probably younger than me.
