June is LGBT Pride Month, making it the perfect time for American Apparel to debut its first transgender model, former "America’s Next Top Model" contestant Isis King. King, 26, appears in a series of new ads for the provocative clothing chain, wearing Pride Month T-shirts.

transgender model

"American Apparel is showing bold leadership by being among just a few companies to include transgender people in its national ads," GLAAD President Herndon Graddick said in a statement. "The company’s statement that 'Gay is OK' will reach millions and send an important message in support of equality." King, 26, was the first transgender contestant on "Top Model," too. Do you think American Apparel is making a bold move toward equality by using her in their ads? Or is it just a gimmicky way to get attention?

geez people, when is society gonna grow up. why should anyone care about another persons preference? media has freely exposed sex, drugs, violence, and much much more and noone seems to have a problem with it, why all the fuss over gay? i personal dont enjoy being with someone of the same sex, but if someone else does, how is that even any of my business? i really dont see the big deal.........

I think it's gimmicky of course, but also I want to know why would a gay guy want to look like a woman? Are gay people just gender confused?

With transgenders, it's not about wanting to look like a woman, it's that they know that they have been born in the wrong body, and they know that if they are a guy, they are supposed to be a girl, and vice versa

they are born a boy, but they know they should have been a girl, or they were born a girl and should have been a boy.

Dont get me wrong I WANT there to be a transgender model and think its great, but I think this was all a marketing ploy by American Apparel, not true concern for gay rights. If they actually cared about gay rights they would participate and give to gay rights charities.

It's nice to know that popular media is behind a good cause and not afraid to really show it. I like it.

I have no problem with a transgender model if anything, I support it. But advertising it the way they seem to be right now, looks like they're trying to cash in on a hot topic in the media.

It's not just them though, they're doing this in comics too for the 'shock value' I guess.

Why should it be necessary? If that's what she wants to do with her life, it's not fair people question it and say it's not necessary

I have no issue with this, what I DO have an issue with are the under age models...ALL models of ADULT clothing should be ADULTS! Obviously kids clothing should be modelled by kids but adult campaigns should be left to the adults, not some androgenous 13 year old made up to look 25...it's creepy!

Oh, that's Isis from America's Next Top Model, really likeable and nice person. I believe in live and let live. I only have problems when someone tries to change something that is a Truth into a lie that benefits their interests. Transgender Model, sure!!, changing the definition of Marriage or the American value system, hell to the No! I think Isis should do modeling but to push the homosexual agenda in people's faces is more than the assignment of being a model. That's why I voted "Gimmicky".

There really should be a "so what?" choice . If this company, or any company can suceed with a product for which there's a market, it's no one's fricken business.

Hopefully we still live in a free market economy where businesses are allowed to find and serve demand - and be allowed to succeed or fail while taking risks.

I've only met two homosexuals in my life, that I'm aware of. It was when I worked at a hotel, and they were both, in separate incidents, sacked for theft. Not a surprise. Someone so base that they'll do sexual things with someone of the same gender basically has no morals.

Morals also encompass how we treat other people so Jack's moral standards are obviously lacking in that area!
  • Jack skyebrand 2012/06/17 00:53:15

The fact that they were thieves is merely a side issue; an extension of their immorality. If someone engages in homosexual behaviour, then they're a bad person. If everyone gave in to their most base instincts then we'd all still be living in caves!

Of course it's behaviour! You might as well say that theft isn't behaviour! Both are bad.

There isn't really much else for either of us to say in this argument. I know that you're a bad person, and you think that I am. Neither of us are going to change our opinions. I only hope my side wins.
