June is LGBT Pride Month, making it the perfect time for American Apparel to debut its first transgender model, former "America’s Next Top Model" contestant Isis King. King, 26, appears in a series of new ads for the provocative clothing chain, wearing Pride Month T-shirts.

transgender model

"American Apparel is showing bold leadership by being among just a few companies to include transgender people in its national ads," GLAAD President Herndon Graddick said in a statement. "The company’s statement that 'Gay is OK' will reach millions and send an important message in support of equality." King, 26, was the first transgender contestant on "Top Model," too. Do you think American Apparel is making a bold move toward equality by using her in their ads? Or is it just a gimmicky way to get attention?

geez people, when is society gonna grow up. why should anyone care about another persons preference? media has freely exposed sex, drugs, violence, and much much more and noone seems to have a problem with it, why all the fuss over gay? i personal dont enjoy being with someone of the same sex, but if someone else does, how is that even any of my business? i really dont see the big deal.........

I'm not saying I'm special in any way. I'm saying that I can have my own opinions just like you can. You're not any more right or wrong than I am.

There is no wrong or right when it comes to opinions. Well what makes your opinion any greater than mine, just curious?

No, it's not. Arguing whether being gay is better than transgendered is opinion-based. Stating there is nothing factually wrong with being gay or trasngendered is not. It's simple truth. Like I said, this is no different than arguing whether the earth is round, flat or square. There is only one right answer, and people who believe the wrong ones are either stupid, misguided, or horribly misinformed.

Homosexuality and transgenderism is constantly shoved in our faces. Turn your TV on and flip through a couple of channels and you'll see.

Well gay is everywhere. Look at TV shows for example... There's always a gay character now. Or reality shows. Everywhere we're being told that "gay is okay." That's all I'm saying.
  • The Pot... bamabel... 2012/06/18 19:55:12

Well, umm, art tends to mimic reality so if they have gay characters it's because there are gay people in the world.

Also, if that's your only argument for homosexuality being 'shoved in people's faces', one can just as easily say that heterosexuality is shoved in our faces, or whiteness, or religion, and in much greater amounts than homosexuality is.

You're right, not a great point. Got me on that. Just saying there is a lot more gay characters and what not on TV, and it's just everywhere. But if we do go back to the original question, you have to agree that the ad is quite gimmicky.
  • The Pot... bamabel... 2012/06/19 20:01:11
    The Potato Princess
A lot more now than there were before, yes, because a) more people are openly gay now and b) less people think homosexuality is some kind of filth that needs to be kept off TV.

Also, no I don't have to. I see nothing wrong with the ad.

Who the hell cares whether or not this model is transgender or not?! Does it matter? Still human, still has FEELINGS. If you can't handle how the world is changing then go fall down a tree, because society is evolving and this kind of stuff is OK. Get over it!

These poor sick twisted souls should be in mental institutions instead of promoting their perversion in the media.

Maybe you should let the experts on psychology figure that out, and actually they'd prescribe a different approach to yours if you actually did your research.

That's because most people are not experts in psychology yet believe they know everything, and make ignorant statements about putting transgendered/transexual people into mental institutions.

Of course it sounds very dumb for experts to hear.

It's like a person who knows nothing about physics giving their very ignorant opinion on gravity for a physics expert and then complaining when the expert says they should do some research first if they don't want to sound dumb.

.... I've never mentioned that they should be institutionalized, but I've vociferously pointed out that they can shove their ' In Your Face ' tactics ... if thats you gig, do it and leave the rest of us alone.

Just for chatter .... why was Chastity Bono on Dancing w/Stars .... looks, appearance, physique, intellect .... nope, none of them

Psyk + Physics degrees ...... hate to break the news to you, but we went from the Stone Age to the Nuke Age with people who for the most part had no more than an 8th grade education .... made a major portion of Japan toast without a degree .... imagine that.

The so-called "experts" on psychology have been taken over by the homosexual movement.
