June is LGBT Pride Month, making it the perfect time for American Apparel to debut its first transgender model, former "America’s Next Top Model" contestant Isis King. King, 26, appears in a series of new ads for the provocative clothing chain, wearing Pride Month T-shirts.

transgender model

"American Apparel is showing bold leadership by being among just a few companies to include transgender people in its national ads," GLAAD President Herndon Graddick said in a statement. "The company’s statement that 'Gay is OK' will reach millions and send an important message in support of equality." King, 26, was the first transgender contestant on "Top Model," too. Do you think American Apparel is making a bold move toward equality by using her in their ads? Or is it just a gimmicky way to get attention?

geez people, when is society gonna grow up. why should anyone care about another persons preference? media has freely exposed sex, drugs, violence, and much much more and noone seems to have a problem with it, why all the fuss over gay? i personal dont enjoy being with someone of the same sex, but if someone else does, how is that even any of my business? i really dont see the big deal.........

I don't really mind anything going on in the model world other than the BMI issue from a few months ago.

It's great that they're trying to get people to understand that Gay is OK.
I just wouldn't wear the clothes myself - I don't like wearing clothes with slogans and stuff on....kinda tacky.
The GAY O.K. design one is simple yet effective :)

For money. I don't see American Apparel promote "pro-family" gear or "Straight Pride" wear.

I am so sick of people complaining about not having a "straight-pride" month and things to that effect, EVERY SINGLE DAY is straight-pride. EVERY DAY. Straight is the majority, you walk around with your wives, and your children, and ridicule us because we dont think the same as you, because we arent attracted to the same things as you, The majority of the population is "Pro-family", You want a straight pride shirt? You want a straight parade? Go get one! Whats stopping you?
  • Resp Ash 2012/06/16 23:57:11

Yes but did we start a silly "Pride" movement? EVERY SINGLE DAY you walk around with your gay friends and husbands. So what are you talking about? Go get a "Straight Pride" shirt?? Why that would be hateful!

The whole point of the pride movement was to band together against hatred and violence. No such bigotry exists against heterosexuals, so the need never arose.

Sure there is anti-family hatred and anti-hetero hatred! You don't really think that ALL gays are a loving "We Are The World" sing along group do you?

Oh, of course they may be a few bitter individuals, but I've never heard of a single case of a heterosexual being severely beaten because of their sexual orientation. Have you?

Look who's against "Straight Pride"! Look who finds "Straight Pride" offensive! Listen to the intolerant one! Tolerance is a two-way street!

Nobody. Nobody in this discussion has said they would be offended by a shirt like that. Go ahead and wear it if you want.

Because heteros and families don't have a history of being treated as second class citizens in their own country. This is a way a celebration that we are one step closer to being treated as equals, Do heteros need to celebrate that?
  • Resp Ev Rom 2012/06/16 23:58:10

There are no equals. We are all different.

Equal under the law and constitution is not the same as people being identical.
  • Resp Ev Rom 2012/06/20 04:45:14

I already said that above. Equal rights does not make us equal in intelligence or looks or physical qualities. In that sense we are not equal or the same. We are different and have differences.
  • Ev Rom Resp 2012/06/20 05:16:57
    Ev Rom
so if you look or are different in some way you don't deserve to be treated as equal under the law or have the same constitutional rights?
  • Resp Ev Rom 2012/06/20 11:37:51
    Resp
Of course laws should be equally applied. But people are not the same or equal. We are all different. IN THAT SENSE I SAY WE ARE NOT EQUAL.

Plastic surgery does not change anything.
And I would like to point out how everyone is "beautiful just the way they are" unless the are transsexuals then they should have all the surgery they can afford! Liberal's logic!
