Amazon to Have Same-Day Delivery Soon: Will the E-Commerce Giant Destroy Local Retail?

E-commerce giant Amazon.com, is investing tons of money (like, hundreds of millions of dollars) into opening massive shipping centers close to major metropolitan hubs. In California alone, "Amazon will spend $500 million and hire 10,000 people at its new California warehouses."

Why is Amazon doing this, you ask? Because Amazon’s new goal is to get stuff to you immediately -- as soon as a few hours after you hit "buy." This will undoubtedly shake-up the retail industry, if not damage it severely. There have been online companies in the past that have attempted to offer same-day delivery, but quickly failed.

SLATE.COM reports:
Amazon has long enjoyed an unbeatable price advantage over its physical rivals. When I buy a $1,000 laptop from Wal-Mart, the company is required to collect local sales tax from me, so I pay almost $1,100 at checkout. In most states, Amazon is exempt from that rule.

And isn't it nice when you walk in and some real, non artificially animated employee, says "Hi, how are you today?". Surely beats the alternative of the obligatory, tight lipped, robotic bark of "Welcome to Walmart", while staring at their hand, and picking refuse out from under their nails, and smacking their wad of cud. I miss the small Ma and Pa everything stores....Just a thought...

I totally agree, small store with a soul are great because you get service and advice from someone who knows what he/she is talking about. It makes a whole lot of a difference to me.

I think it is. Big store hires employe that don't know and don't care about their job. You vote with your dollars after all. Going to a small local and knowledgeable store from time to time to shop should help ;) (I do for butchery and bread)

I agree. I have my favorite bakery and butcher. We also have a pretty nice produce stand also. I know that I feel better when I support and frequent small business, as it feels like I am doing my part to support the community that supports me....Just a thought...

No. There are large retail and online stores that are already set up like this. Amazon will do no better.

Might want to give the NASDAQ a peak. Amazon is not referred to as a "giant" for no reason. Amazon is kickin their asses already. Should they corner the shipping game, other retailers will be scrambling to do the same....Just a thought...

There is a kind of pleasantness in walking and browsing through a physical shop and where you can physically examine products.
You can also use prices on Amazon and other vendors to negotiate a lower price in the shop. I did so when I decided to buy a new hard drive in a local computer shop.

There are tons of people out there who will not buy online. Some don't have credit cards. Some don't trust online shopping. I live in Washington State, so I have to pay sales tax, no matter what, on Amazon purchases. I have found them much faster about shipping than their usual estimates. I buy from them frequently, but it's rarely stuff I could get locally. Usually, I'm going to Amazon because I can't get it locally without a lot more trouble than it is to go through them.

There will always be a market for local retail. A whole lot of people STILL don't like to buy online. If I have a choice between local store A and online retailer B, I'll go local every time!

    Not really ..
This may mark a change in marketing and delivery for the Urban areas ..
but in the Rural areas ..
    (Where I am at)
the fact is there will always be specialized local retailers ..
whom we will shop for what is the prevalent need in the area ..
as far as specialty goods that we can't source locally ..
we've used Internet Marketers for some time ...
    (before it was catalog sales)

No, there's still people who want to buy in a store. Not me. I love Amazon. Amazon now collects sales tax in Texas.

I doubt it but that would be so cool to get it on the same day.

And yet another person proves that momentary gratification is king. It is that line of thinking, that got us into this mess to begin with....Just a thought....

What? But going out and buying out from a retail store is somehow less gratifying? Please.

The nature of my response was based on the death of retail, the laziness of the average person, and the convenience of internet shopping (hence the reference to the mess). Wasn't aimed at you per-say, just the same day comment. Yes, you can get it same day from a retailer. My point (however vague) was actually about internet purchases and their (apparently soon it seems) ability to deliver same day, being the death knell of the retail outlet. Anyhow, have a nice day....Just a (very sleepy) thought..

Amazon will likely help local retail as do most big box stores. They help consumers and local businesses.
