Amazon to Have Same-Day Delivery Soon: Will the E-Commerce Giant Destroy Local Retail?

E-commerce giant Amazon.com, is investing tons of money (like, hundreds of millions of dollars) into opening massive shipping centers close to major metropolitan hubs. In California alone, "Amazon will spend $500 million and hire 10,000 people at its new California warehouses."

Why is Amazon doing this, you ask? Because Amazon’s new goal is to get stuff to you immediately -- as soon as a few hours after you hit "buy." This will undoubtedly shake-up the retail industry, if not damage it severely. There have been online companies in the past that have attempted to offer same-day delivery, but quickly failed.

SLATE.COM reports:
Amazon has long enjoyed an unbeatable price advantage over its physical rivals. When I buy a $1,000 laptop from Wal-Mart, the company is required to collect local sales tax from me, so I pay almost $1,100 at checkout. In most states, Amazon is exempt from that rule.

You don't get it do you. Amazon provides Competition..... Competition builds better retail and wholesale. Makes it all more honest. Wal-Marts the same way...... The Marxist Unionists seem to want to keep total control/ They do not help the worker and more they just keep[ the promise going but LIE like a Rug......

I think they will destroy places like Best Buy, Barnes and Noble ect. because as the post mentioned, they will have a tax advantage. local retail shops won't be able to compete with. If Best Buy and Barnes and Noble were wise, they would contract their merchandise out to Amazon so they can serve as pick up hubs. They already have the storefronts. If you can't beat them, join them!

Best Buy is overpriced, I go to Costco and always do better. Barnes and Noble is also over priced I go to Half priced books and find plenty of variety.

There are many things people don't want to buy without being able to see it first.

It becomes annoyingly difficult when trying to return an online item.

Besides, 2 day and next day shipping are already pricy. Depending on what you are buying, you can pay double or more the price of the item in the expedited shipping. Is this going to be even worse?

E-commerce is the future. I already use amazon for almost all of my purchases. That being said, they won't literally destroy local retail, they will just make local retail evolve.

I feel the same. Really the only way the will destroy retail is if a particular retail chain fails to change. You have to be a step ahead because it takes years to implement changes effectively. If a business is just changing as a reactionary measure to competion instead of from true vision, thats the end!

CAPITALISM NEEDS COMPETITION It is good for Business and Great for Customer Service.
Other Companies will either pick up on the new methods or technology or be left in the dust. The winner is the consumer

People like seeing what they're about to buy in first person instead of a picture of those products. We skim through books looking for the appetizing ones, look at food to make sure it's new and hasn't been damaged, we try on clothes to make sure they fit, we test furniture looking for the right furniture, and so on. You can't do all that when you shop online.

PRAISE GOD FOR WALMART and for refusing to join the STUPID STINKING UNIONS

I love Walmart and i told Corporate Offices that if they ever go Union I would never shop with them again but would buy on-line.

When I was in Retail, I worked both sides Union and Management and I HATE UNIONS

No, they won't do that, but they are already putting a hurting on the old fashioned big box stores, already helping to kick Borders and Circuit City to the curb. The next likely one to disappear will probably be Best Buy,especially if Amazon can do a buy today, get it today, kind of service!

I'd still like to have that "hans-on" experience before buying something. Besides there's a lot of loyalty associated with local stores.

When Amazon says same day delivery they mean two to 7 days from now.

Remember hearing about people paying like 10 bucks extra for next day delivery and them not getting it for a week. Just suck it up and wait instead of wasting your money.

Warehousing and shipping cost real money, companies like Amazon have had advantage of offering a large inventory of goods without having to pay to store and handle them. The more like retailers they become, the more they will be subject to the financial limitations of retailers.

I guess the question is how much difference will faster shipping make to sales? Will they make enough extra sales to justify the extra cost?

The cost for same-day delivery will presumably be MUCH higher than for normal or normal-express, so it might have some benefit for certain things (expensive, heavy) or for people who use mail order because they don't live near stores. It's certainly not going to have any effect at all on people who don't have computers.

Unless the cost relates to savings (Sales Tax), it won't destroy local shopping.

As moves to regulate the net and track people using it grow, it might even backfire.

Ultimately, consumers have the power to make or break any retailer. A business like Amazon only exists because consumers enjoy their services. If other business don't adapt they fail.

People [some people] like to shop. Amazon is for some who just use it as a convenience and a comparative shopper such as myself. There will always be a need for retail stores. But now they can't charge higher for the convenience because of an immediate need.

The local retailers were already destroyed by the big box stores. Turnabout.

Plus I get next minute delivery on my kindle.

that and ebooks. Im guilty of having a kindle yes, but i have that so i can watch movies and have books on hand wherever i go. Our bookstores are shutting down and aside from one vintage record store you pretty much have to stick to best buy, walmart or target for cds and they pretty much all suck if you don't like mainstream music. It has become less about the choice of where you want to shop and more lack of choices. I know thats how it is where i live and I know it was the same way in the last place i visit. I went into a music (instrument) shop in covington georgia and asked a girl where bookstores and music shops were in town and she she said "they closed them all". They had one used book store and that was it. I can't stand it. oh and you can't find old movies (and I'm talking most movies going from 97 and back in stores because best buy doesn't carry films back that far. they say they don't sell. wtf

I do think that it's time for retail store to disapear, online store provide better price and service. It's just Darwinian after all, the best survive. And objectively look at what store do now, you get into the store nobody can help you find stuff and you have the choice between waiting in line at or self checkout... Like they have you do the job of the cashier now!!!
