Am I weird because I hate to shower?

ErinSnowChristal 2012/06/29 20:22:46
I am a 35 yr old woman who can't stand having to shower. My hair gets greasy at around four or five days and rather than shower, I'll wash it in the sink. If I am dirty, of course, or after sex or during my period I will suck it up and shower, but I have to wear shower shoes whether the shower itself is clean or not. I do clean my naughty bits and underarms daily-also my feet of course-but I cannot stand the act of showering, and taking a bath is completely out of the question. Is there anyone else out there or am I all alone?
You!

Yeah, Sockpuppet said 'ablutophobia', but that's a phobia of being clean-its not like that, though. I just hate my bare, wet feet touching anything-hence the shower shoes. Strange, I know. I just wish there were someone else out there.

    You should seek professional help.

You should seek isitnormal.com ....They could use your genius insight. Clearly your empathy (or lack thereof) warrants at least a browse.

You asked my opinion, and you got it! What's wrong with professional help? People do seek help from professionals when they need it. It is clearly much more affective than googling isitnormal.com.

I was merely commenting on your seeming lack of empathy. Forgive me if I misinterpreted your tone because of my insecurity regarding this particular inquiry. And I was implying isitnormal is a joke of a website when it comes to helpful/useful advice. Effectively a joke, so to speak.

Luckily I don't have that problem. IN fact without a shower I'd die!! Working in a nursing home I have to have a shower. It's unusual however.

"Weird" isn't a very helpful way to assess anyone. It's unusual, I'll give you that. Just for the sake of my own curiosity, can you identify what it is (or might be) about showers and baths that you find repellant? Is it a fear of some sort?

I suppose 'unusual' is what I meant to convey, more or less. Its almost a phobic reaction I have to the feeling of my bare, wet feet touching anything but socks (clean, natch) after washing them. I was really hoping for some helpful feedback here, having posted on isitnormal.com as well, but the majority of posters there are young and sometimes just frankly, obviously, abusive...'gross, wash your ass', 'get in the shower, crazy person' kinds of things. Not exactly input.

A quick Googling brings back the word "ablutophobia" and some links that might be helpful. Here's one, right off the top:

Haven't seen anything specific about feet in this 2-minute research project, but it might well be a variation on the theme.

I have a buddy who suffered extreme anxiety attacks over a LOT of unremarkable things, and a few sessions with a counselor worked like a charm. I sure wouldn't feel hopeless about any of this.

Nice to know this can be defined, at any rate. And you made.me feel lots better, unlike some who will remain unnamed. Share questions with me as often as you wish-I dig the in-depth insight. Much love for making it simpler than I was making it... ;D

Just another cog in the Internet Hate Machine, Ma'am. Happy to help. :O)

I sure wish you luck with this thing... and with your impending surgery.
