All You Can Eat Buffet: How Much Tip?

Waiters and bus boys at all-you-can-eat buffets probably don't get the same tip as a full service restaurant. They bring drinks and clear tables. But they don't take full orders or work as much.

Used to manage a restaraunt that had buffet, and it was aggravating that people would not tip the wait staff because they had to get their own food, but if the wait person is filling your glass 6 times, removing 8 dirty plates, and still attending you, it is actually more time consuming to deal with a buffet customer than a regular dine in order

I tipped 10% at a buffet once and the staff complained. I don't see how they deserve the customary 20% I give at a full service restaurant.

I leave a few dollars on the table. I worked as waitress in college (Applebees). I always got AMAZING tips, and I am a good tipper as well. Outside of this country, they discourage tipping... They feel it helps the owners get away with not paying their employees a fair wage. I agree. Tipping should be optional if someone does something extra.

With waitress/er depend of how they serve me, I am not going base on the 15 or 20%, I tip base on how well they treat me, they serve me badly, they get a penny...

Without waitress/er, I always tip the guy or gir who clean the tables... I have had clean tables before so I know how hard they work.

I tip based on service. Just two weeks ago, we left two cents on the table... And that was being generous. Really though, the only difference is the choice of foods. Cooked to order or from the hog troughs. All the waiter does different is take the order to the kitchen and return it when it's ready. Good service = good tip even for the hog trough if the waiter is attentive.

I always tip around 15% of the bill. That's just what you do in my opinion.

$1 per person, unless she keeps my drink filled, then I'll throw in some extra. But, it's usually a little less, because there is less interaction.

buffet work is mainly bussing and keeping the buffet neat from all the pigs at the trough. but i've always wondered; here is a deal where they say they can make a profit on $10.99 by feeding you all you can eat. what are you actually eating? and who's the loser? tip 10% in the jar at the counter.

They don't take the orders or bring the food. However, they pick up about three times more dishes and usually have to fill drinks more than at other restaurants due to the fact people go there to eat more food then at other places.

It the waiters are attentive, keep my drink filled and help to make it a good dining experience I tip well. Rather its buffet or not, you tip according to the service you receive.

If a waitress fills your drinks or takes your dirty plates you're being serviced and you are suppose to tip.

The busser takes the plates away. I was always frustrated when I was a busser in high school because I always busted my rump equally as hard as the waitresses and only got 10% of their tips. Replacing my drinks aren't tip worthy at a buffet, but if I could directly tip the bussers I'd be all over it.

I guess it just depends where you are dining at then. No digs at you, I was just comparing my situation. I guess the question was a little broad, huh? ;)

I will tell you that in most buffets, watch the wait staff and if they stand around untill you are done I will leave nothing. If they keep my area clear, I will drop no less then a dollar per head at the table.

In our area, we leave one dollar per person. I feel that is more than sufficient. After all, I do all the work, they just bring me a glass of ice tea.

    Less to zero.
There are buffets with self serve drinks. So we're just left with clearing dishes. Seems like the cooks put in more effort, no?

Amazingly, I have often found the worst service is the slow times. Because that is when the waitstaff is cleaning and doing side work, and sometimes even forgets they havve customers

This is a good question ! I love buffets and I usually give $ 1.00 a person if I go with my mother and my friends. We get up all the time for our food and I even keep the table nice and clean.
I tip more if I am being fully served.
