All The Cool Girls Are Lesbians Shirt Stirs Controversy At School

Controversy erupted at a Lynn English High School meeting that was held to discuss an incident where a student was told to cover up -- and never bring back to school -- a shirt that read, "All the cool girls are lesbians," WDHD-TV reports.

Although the student wore the shirt back in January, it wasn't addressed until Mayor Judith Flanagan Kennedy brought it up to the school committee last week.

In the meeting, Kennedy said the girl contacted her to say she had been wronged by the school, a sentiment with which the mayor told the committee she agreed.

"I did some legal research on this and I believe she is right," Kennedy told the Daily Item. "I don't believe the school had the authority to ask her to cover it up."

According to the Item, the girl's letter said Vice Principal Joseph O'Hagan told her to cover up her shirt because it was "political" and "offensive to some people."

If girls were allowed to wear shirts that say "I love boys," the student said, she should be allowed to wear hers.

It's no worse than the "I love boys" t-shirts.

In our school, that would be considered a controversial and potentially offensive comment, and quite sexist as well. The person wearing it, would have to REMOVE it. Some girl wore a shirt "Black Girls Rule" - it fit ALL of the above, along with being extremely racist. The Principal found the girl and reprimanded her immediately. In such a diverse environment, you just can't be showing favoritism to anyone.

She's completely right. If that stirs controversy then so should shirts like "I love boys". There's nothing political about the opinion stated on the shirt. It would have been offensive if it stated something along the lines of hate towards those who disagree with homosexuality. But a mere opinionated shirt such as that is allowed at a public school.

IT'S SAYING, girls are not cool UNLESS they are lesbians. That shows preference, making those not preferred, not cool. THAT IS putting one ABOVE the other - go look up the work "racist" - this is no different, except it's dealing with sexual preference, not race. Comparing this over a girl saying she loves boys??? Sorry, but that's not saying anyone is better than anyone.

You hear people all the time saying "I'm better than you" or silly stuff like that. It doesn't mean they're racist or discriminating against them. I see your point, but this shirt is a joke really, no need to take it so seriously. I assume it's a way for this girl to show her confidence in being a lesbian. Just like girls wearing shirts that say "Anything a boy can do, a girl can do better" technically, that's sexism, but it's really just a joke to pull up their confidence a bit. Not problem with that.

Indeed the shirt that would read "All the kool guys are gay" in front and on the back "I like boys" worn by a young man.

life is tough ... adults just need to relax and let the kids be who they are as long as they're not hurting anybody else ...

Arrogance and conceit are not good traits. Adults are supposed to teach kids NOT to be that way.

what is this supposed to mean? you think i'm arrogant and conceited, maybe? how so?

you think the sentiment expressed on the t-shirt is arrogant and conceited, maybe? it's a kid wearing it ... what's the big deal?

kids in school are arrogant and conceited ... and the schools promote that idea too: "go warriors! we're gonna smash the trojans! woohoo" ... blah blah blah ...

Either let her wear the shirt or start having uniforms. Even a shirt saying "have a nice day" could offend someone.
