According to a new government survey, there has been an increase in the amount of women who consume alcohol while pregnant. In fact, the study revealed that some women who drink alcohol during pregnancy actually go on binges.

Further, "...nearly 1 in 5 said they went on at least one binge – downing four or more drinks. Pregnant women ages 35 to 44 were the biggest drinkers." The study included 14,000 pregnant women. What do you think of this recent fad? Is it OK... or dangerous?

HUFFINGTONPOST.COM reports:
A government survey shows 1 in 13 pregnant women drink alcohol and some even go on binges. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says drinking -- especially binge drinking -- can damage fetal brain development.

Any soon-to-be-mother who is dumb enough to consume alcohol while expecting is not a suitable mother. Consuming alcohol during pregnancy has the potential to cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and Down's Syndrome. Stupid Parents!!! fetal alcohol syndrome downs syndrome

I believe child development and child psychiatry should be required courses for parenthood.
Then these idiots would know that a majority of brain development in a fetus is during the first trimester. When they drink it up during that time, they are really setting up a lifetime of education dysfunction for their children whose brain synapses are dysfunctional.

Fortunatley for me, I worked at a hospital before and during my pregnancies, and I was well aware of the damage of alcohol and drugs on babies in utero. I volunteered my lunch hour to comfort the tightly swaddled crack babies who suffered from withdrawl and screamed for hours on end in pain.

Perhaps seeing that would make these selfish women drink water instead. The rights of the unborn are non existant, if anyone gave a newborn alcohol, they'd go to jail!

Make drinking/drugging during pregnancy a crime like child abuse!

One or two drinks is fine. Binge drinking is not good for mom or the baby.

I had many stress related pregnancy conditions. My doctor told me to go home and have a glass of wine. I told him I refused to drink while pregnant, even though they say you can. His response, "Fine. Do what you want but understand that the baby is in distress and may not make it." I went home and had a half glass every few days until they induced me.

Binge drinking, as stated above and if I looked it up right, is not good for the child nor the person herself anyway..
This is so obvious I think I shouldn't even write this -_-"

Depends on what people call moderation some mentioned the French and the Italians but forgot to mention that what they usually drink is wine during meals where as we would drink soda they drink wine instead.

I don't think any drinking at all should be done while the child is still in the mother. It's very bad.

Alcohol consumption, just like most things is dependent on moderation. I have no doubt that a pregnant woman would run zero risk for her baby if she drank a glass of wine with her dinner. Of course our society is never moderate in our panic filled warnings.

that will totally ruin the appearance, health, or probably life of your baby, no matter how much the pregnant woman likes to relax with alchohol, i'm sorry, BUT DON"T DRINK WHILE PREGNANT EVER! your baby will more likely have health problems or just die.

A glass of wine sometimes is alright but excessive drinking while pregnant is very dangerous to a babies brain development.

This has been asked before and my answer is the same. A fetus is not 21 years old, so there's no reason it should be given alcohol.

Great answer! If anyone gave a newborn alcohol/drugs, they'd go to jail!

But give alcohol to a developing brain of a fetus and some women are just that stupid and selfish. FAS is no joke and very obvious to any pediatrician.

as long as its in moderation. my mother would only drink one beer or a glass of red wine every few days, and the tannins are actually supposed to be good for fetal development, according to her doctor at least

It provides only risk. It does nothing to help in the development of the child, it doesn't make them super geniuses. How could it possibly be ok?

Not ok in moderation, not ok at all. Whether your baby is fortunate to escape permanent damage or disability, they still have a *terrible* reaction to it.

Obviously binge drinking is not good and is going to increase the chance of problems. BUt, prior to the recent rise of safety Nazis, women used to drink in moderation while pregnant and were just fine. Ambulance-chasing attorneys are to blame, as usual.

A couple of glasses of red wine is good for many peoples health. A good dark beer, Guinness comes to mind, has many nutrients that are good for you on an everyday basis. Of course this does not mean that you get drunk every day, just a glass or two. Most of the fear is based on our puritanical approach to many things in this country.

I chose "OK" just to be an ass about it. The thing is... OF COURSE a pregnant woman can't go on binges and drink excessive amounts of alcohol. She shouldn't be smoking weed, or taking over-the-counter meds either.

Now, let me throw some ants in your hemorrhoid cream: a SINGLE glass of wine, or a SINGLE 12 oz serving of beer; ONCE per day is actually quite healthy during pregnancy but you'll never find any reputable agency recommending it because the mass public is largely stupid. IF the ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) were to make such a recommendation, a whole lot of idiots would say, "hell, if ONE beer is good for me, I bet twelve per day will be awesome!!!" Ergo, we all have to say that drinking while pregnant or breastfeeding earns you a one-way ticket to hell. In truth, anything in excess is really bad for you no matter what your status may be.

Better safe than sorry as there's no real way to tell how much with trigger FAS.
That said, when I finally get pregnant, NObody better try taking my green tea away and wagging their finger at me for caffeine consumption during pregnancy.
Green tea has been drunk for centuries in perfect safety by women in Asia during pregnancy, and the antioxidants in it also serve to protect the child from some things.

A little bit of alcohol has been proven not to be dangerous but the problem is many people don't leave it at the odd drink. That's why in my personal view (which doesn't account for a hell of a lot) no alcohol should be drunk if she's pregnant. Better safe than sorry.
