According to a new government survey, there has been an increase in the amount of women who consume alcohol while pregnant. In fact, the study revealed that some women who drink alcohol during pregnancy actually go on binges.

Further, "...nearly 1 in 5 said they went on at least one binge – downing four or more drinks. Pregnant women ages 35 to 44 were the biggest drinkers." The study included 14,000 pregnant women. What do you think of this recent fad? Is it OK... or dangerous?

HUFFINGTONPOST.COM reports:
A government survey shows 1 in 13 pregnant women drink alcohol and some even go on binges. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says drinking -- especially binge drinking -- can damage fetal brain development.

Any soon-to-be-mother who is dumb enough to consume alcohol while expecting is not a suitable mother. Consuming alcohol during pregnancy has the potential to cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and Down's Syndrome. Stupid Parents!!! fetal alcohol syndrome downs syndrome

The bottom line is: they don't know. All those doctors who say drinking is bad, drinking is not bad, drinking is great, a little drinking is okay...

Now we know a glass of red wine lowers cholesterol and cuts fat in a diet in adults. But drinking bathtub-gin through a beer bong while preggers causes Downs Syndrome. How much is too much? Too dangerous to take a chance, because they just don't know where the line is.

Not only is it dangerous, it can also cause the kid to become more prone to being an alcoholic.

If alcohol can destroy an adult liver, what do you think it will do to a baby's?

Sorry, but I for one don't believe that humans need mind altering chemicals like alcohol in their system to be happy. Anything that can wreck a baby's development probably isn't healthy for humans in general.

At my (unanticipated) Conception, my parents were drunk (she a bit more than he) therefore I was too.

    Might explain a thing or two… … … … Asperger's for one.

I don't know why people struggle with the alcohol thing. For goodness sakes, it's only 10 months. I steered clear of it and both my sons are brilliant, so risk it if you want to, but I didn't and wouldn't. Why risk an unborn child? Come to think of it, I cannot imagine this idea of being irresponsible to an unborn. What kind of parent would such a selfish woman end of being? Being a parent is supposed to be a selfless act.

Yes it is ok...just in extreme moderation. Some studies have shown that small amounts of alcohol can be beneficial to both mother and child.

There is no "ok" amount of alcohol during pregnancy. Every case is different. I have worked with fetal alcohol affected/syndrome children and their lives are not easy.

Drinking while pregnant is very dangerous. Any woman who drinks while pregnant is not what I would call a good mother. Stupid to think nothing would happen to your baby by alcohol in your and the babies system!

Common Sense,TAKE A VISIT TO NICU'S,FAS,-alcohol is dangerous to consume for both baby and Mother's health while pregnant and if the Mother is the only one watching the child-drunkenness blinds common sense, sensory modes are low/reaction time is at stake.

ScienceDaily;"..Researchers at Northwestern University Medical School have found that a chemical in red wine believed to help reduce risk for heart disease is a form of estrogen. The substance, resveratrol, is highly concentrated in the skin of grapes and is abundant in red wine. MODERATE consumption of red wine has been widely reported to reduce risk for cardiovascular disease(and therefore promotes longevity It has been shown previously to have a number of potentially beneficial properties, including antioxidant, anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects..".
Red Wine and Cancer Prevention: Fact Sheet
Red wine is a rich source of biologically active phytochemicals, chemicals found in plants. Particular compounds called polyphenols found in red wine—such as catechins and resveratrol—are thought to have antioxidant or anticancer properties.

If it's not good for the mother's brain and body, it is definitely not good for a developing fetus. You don't need brains to realize this.

After all these years and all the research going back over 75 years, and this question is still being asked?
HELL yes. Alcohol, drugs, including tobacco, have been proven to have been the direct cause in pregnancies. Most often to complications in pregnancies an/or birth defects

This had to be the dumbest question ever. 'Dangerous' suggests a chance of injury but every sip of alcohol injuries a developing embryo. It's not dangerous, it's cruel. If you're not going to take care of it, get rid of it. Otherwise don't ask government to give you my tax dollars so you can keep your retarded child strapped to a wheelchair so it doesn't randomly maul someones face off.

If you drink too much. Binge drinking, for sure, is dangerous and I would say that moderate but daily drinking is not a good idea, either. I would say that an occasional, single glass of wine or beer won't do any harm, though.
