According to a new government survey, there has been an increase in the amount of women who consume alcohol while pregnant. In fact, the study revealed that some women who drink alcohol during pregnancy actually go on binges.

Further, "...nearly 1 in 5 said they went on at least one binge – downing four or more drinks. Pregnant women ages 35 to 44 were the biggest drinkers." The study included 14,000 pregnant women. What do you think of this recent fad? Is it OK... or dangerous?

A government survey shows 1 in 13 pregnant women drink alcohol and some even go on binges. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says drinking -- especially binge drinking -- can damage fetal brain development.

Any soon-to-be-mother who is dumb enough to consume alcohol while expecting is not a suitable mother. Consuming alcohol during pregnancy has the potential to cause Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and Down's Syndrome. Stupid Parents!!! fetal alcohol syndrome downs syndrome

"The only sad part of human life is that you are aborting millions of My babies every year. How can you see the beauty of babies if you are killing them in the womb? Encourage these mothers to have their children, and live with a little less of your country’s abundant wealth. Once you have your children, how can you think of wanting to kill such beautiful life? America needs to learn how precious life is, or you will suffer My punishment for killing My babies.” Jesus to John Leary

Drinking small amounts of alcohol seems to be ok according the latest research, no doubt that will change again too. However, since pregnancy is only 9 months of your life; I chose to not to indulge. I know several young people with fetal alcohol syn and while it is my understanding that it takes abusing drinking to cause it...why take a chance.

I doubt that a small amount of alcohol will affect an unborn child. Such as a glass of wine or beer once maybe twice during the pregnancy would be ok. These "binges" however are potentially dangerous for the mother and fetus.

From perspective of being veteran RN and mom of 5... new research shows occasional drinks here and there shouldn't hurt your little bundle. But, What if....? Heaven forbid something should happen to your little sweetie, but if it did you would hold yourself responsible for the rest of your days regardless if you were or not. I wouldn't trust the new information. When I was preggers, I was always aware every single thing I stuffed down my throat, I was feeding my baby, Would you put white wine in her/his bottle?

Although the solutions are different cucumbers are never the same after they're pickled. After sufficient alcohol, one may not know she was pickled.

On the serious side, if alcohol shrinks the brain on each indulgence, it must do one hell of a job on a fetus. For a 120 lb woman with a half pound fetus, about 1/2% of alcohol of consumed alcohol is absorbed by the fetus. When the fetus is about 3 pounds the absorption is about 2.5%. At 5 pounds, 4%. That one hell of a hangover for the mothers must be even greater for the fetus who had never before experienced the dizziness, the nausea and the tremendous headache. Fetal alcohol syndrome is a known condition and devastates the start of a life. It is difficult enough to without any exposure to the vices of drugs, alcohol, starvation or obesity.

It's really bad. Some babies are super affected by it, and just one glass early on can still damage them. Better not to risk it.

in very limited amounts and on an infrequent basis. Binge drinking is dangerous not only for the alcohol but for potential accidents from falling down.

The occasional glass of red wine should be ok, but it's probably best to err on the side of caution and avoid alcohol completely. Heavy drinking during pregnancy should be punished as child abuse, imho.

Women who drink wile pregnant have a problems (alcoholic). It's sad that women who are pregnant would rather drink instead of caring for their baby's health. What you eat, drink. inhale is what your giving to your baby.
Is it really that difficult for a mother to not drink wile she has child in her? Drinking wile pregnant is a selfish thing to do. If you can't go without drinking wile your pregnant than maybe you should seek help or not have a baby.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a pattern of mental and physical defects that can develop in a fetus in association with high levels of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Current research also implicates other lifestyle choices made by the prospective mother. Indications for lower levels of alcohol are inconclusive.[1] The current recommendation of both the Surgeon General of the United States and the British Department of Health is to drink no alcohol at all during pregnancy.[2][3][4]

Alcohol crosses the placental barrier and can stunt fetal growth or weight, create distinctive facial stigmata, damage neurons and brain structures, which can result in psychological or behavioral problems, and cause other physical damage.[5][6][7] Surveys found that in the United States, 10–15% of pregnant women report having recently drunk alcohol, and up to 30% drink alcohol at some point during pregnancy.[

    I say:

    STOP IT!

Which is more important to people? A drink or their unborn child? Sure, drink all the wine and champagne and beer you want, as long as you don't mind your new baby having fetal alcohol syndrome or worse.

In moderation, not the martinis and Marlboros my mother smoked and drank while she was bored being pregnant. That said, I seem to be fine, at least as far as standardized testing can tell!
  • Random 2012/07/21 11:14:20
Everything can be dangerous. If people know they are pregnant, then try to lay off the booze. I wouldn't fault a woman who has the occasional sip here and there, but I saw a documentary in health class about binge drinking mothers. I was horrified.

Even one drink puts your baby at risk of foetal alcohol syndrome. Zero alcohol eliminates that risk. I didn't drink at all during either of my pregnancies but a lot of people believe one drink here or there during a pregnancy is ok and that's fine, it's just not the choice or risk I chose to have for me and my children.
  • jackie 2012/07/21 00:13:49
I wanted to bring up this link where this writer said drinking is ok during pregnancy. there were so many women arguing that it is right. It was sad actually, if one of those women start drinking while pregnant and their baby becomes screwed up I hope she gets sued. anyway I seen it a year ago and it was at the top of the page and now I dont see it anymore.... odd. I think its pretty damn dangerous and stupid, their baby is not even born yet but they cant even do that one big thing to protect them? Thats sad, they shouldnt be mothers, but anybody can have sex :/
  • relic 2012/07/21 00:10:06

Hundreds of years of women drank before it was first published as 'dangerous'. I'm talking of a glass of wine, not a binge drinker.
