Adults Pay $750 to Play in Life-Sized Sandbox: Worth the Money?

Aren't sandboxes just for little kids? Not anymore! A business owner in Las Vegas has built what amounts to a life-sized sandbox for adults.

Customers at Dig This can push around dirt, rocks, and huge tires with bulldozers and other construction equipment. All it takes is a 10-minute classroom lesson, guidance from trainers through headsets, and, oh yeah, $750.

Ed Mumm decided to start the business after renting and operating an excavator while building a house in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

"I thought to myself: If I'm having this much fun, imagine the amount of people that don't get to do this stuff that would love to do this," he said.

"When they're in those machines, everything else doesn't mean anything," added Mumm.

"They've forgotten about all the stresses in their lives because the fact is, they've got to focus on that piece of equipment. When they get in there and they rev up that engine, they know they've got a serious program on their hands."

Dig This sits right across the freeway from the Las Vegas strip, near the remnants of an actual construction industry that hasn't recovered since the recession. Unlike many other construction workers, Travis Mills, a trainer at Dig This, is glad to have work.

"A lot of my construction friends are just sitting at home and there's nothing going on. This is a lot more fun. I don't get yelled at by my superintendent all day. I like being around equipment, so that's a plus," he said.

What do you think? Is the opportunity to play in a life-sized sandbox for adults worth the $750 price tag?

I know plenty of men who would love this sort of activity, and some of those who would take an afternoon off from their real jobs to play like this. I even know some who would invite friends and make it a real fun time together.

It seems like a fun and educational way to spend some time in Vegas, but the fee for the adventure is way to high.

since when are adults not allowed to have fun and be happy just because their methods of doing so are "childish?"

It seems to me that if the folks paying the fee are having fun then why not? I don't know how long you can play around with the machines but if it relieves their stress and they're enjoying themselves then I'm all for it. It sounds a bit pricey to me but then again I'm a bit of a tight wad. I've worked in the construction business and have played around with the machinery my self. I was the mechanic and that was part of my job to test the equipment and I know I sure did have a good time with it.

Love it. 'Do it yourself' attitude's the best. People come to have fun in weird ways, end up with new skills and will to actually do things.

Perhaps to those who like kinky fun or missed out on their childhood or want to relive it or simply want to have a nostalgic moment. But for me in this economy I can find something better to do with $750 rather than give it to some organization to wobble in an adult size sand box. I could purchase one of those big kid size pools from Walmart and fill it free with sand from the beach, all for less than 100 bucks and still have fun and roll in it all year long for free if that's the case.

sand beach 100 bucks fun roll year free case Adults playing in a sandbox sand beach 100 bucks fun roll year free case oh hell no

What is dumber, the invention of the adult sandbox, or the adults that play in them? Wow.

It sounds like a choice of the folks that want to participate. There are a lot of other things that people spend money on all the time that pay more than this $750. Take driving a race car for example. There are schools out there that will teach you how to drive a race car and that class alone can cost a few grand easily. Or sky diving or any of a million different things that might tickle your fancy. Me personally? I wouldn't pay the $750 but there are folks out there that are looking for a bit of a thrill.

They could use that money for important things like their kids college funds or their important needs. Or if they just want to throw away money why not use it for something good, like donate it to a cancer or aids foundation or some none profit organisation.

    Looks like fun though!

There's also a lot of heavy equipment you can rent from the Home Depot, but not full-size dozers. But ditch witches are FUN!
