Adidas' Shackle Sneakers: Offensive Reference to Slavery, or Just 'Quirky'?

Adidas has dropped plans to release a pair of "shackle" sneakers after critics bashed the brand for being insensitive to a painful reminder of slavery, CNN reports. The outrage began on June 14, when Adidas began advertising the $350 high-top sneakers, called JS Roundhouse Mids, on its Facebook page.

"Got a sneaker game so hot you lock your kicks to your ankles?" said a caption below a photo of the sneakers. Adidas defended the sneaker's designer, Jeremy Scott, as having a "quirky" and "lighthearted" style, but plans for an August release have been scuttled.

"The design of the JS Roundhouse Mid is nothing more than the designer Jeremy Scott's outrageous and unique take on fashion and has nothing to do with slavery," the company said in a statement. "We apologize if people are offended by the design and we are withdrawing our plans to make them available in the marketplace."

Rev. Jesse Jackson, for one, was offended by the rubber shackles. "The attempt to commercialize and make popular more than 200 years of human degradation, where blacks were considered three-fifths human by our Constitution is offensive, appalling and insensitive," he said in a statement. Do you agree?

Quirky and stupid, but not offensive.

This attributing everything to slavery, is even more ignorant than those shoes.

We have become a nation of self-victimization, where everyone wants to be a victim.

    Offensive? No.

Completely and utterly bloody stupid? Yes.

These things make Crocs look attractive.

Sorry but... not the right kind of shoe for one thing to put shackles on. And for another, ORANGE?? REALLY?!

Tell you what, go back to the drawing board, put them on something like these:

    goth shoe

... and make the shackle actually look METALLIC, preferably a SILVER instead of orange or any color of the rainbow, then maybe you'll have something.

I don't buy those types of shoes to begin with, but yeah I do think that they are ugly. I do think that shackle are a bit much. I think that it is ridiculous that someone would include such a design element. Offended may be a bit harsh, but I am quite put off the shackle.

They are not offensive. They are nice looking shoes. I would get some if they didn't have the shackles or I would get them and cut off the shackles and make it look like there was nothing there. I just read that the shoes have been cancelled. They should just get rid of the shackles.

Really. Did anyone ever think of the past when Nike shoes were so 'appreciated' that the people wearing them were beaten and/or killed so that the 'underprivileged' who could not afford them could have (someone else's) NEW shoes to go with the OLD clothes that they were wearing? This may be a symbol of "Leave my shoes alone, they are connected to me", Beside that, the chains aren't connected to each other like shackles are, they are connected to the shoes, a lackluster presentation of slavery mockery if you ask me. People can be rather ignorant at times.

And to go along with that, just who would be wearing these shoes? 1. Blacks that want to recall the disgust of a previous time? Or 2. Whites who want to show that they are as stupid as others claim that they are, by trying to imitate slavery (for what purpose?) with 'rubber' shackles that don't connect together? Or 3. Maybe a former convict that just can't stand to be out of the slammer without his normal accouterments and feels safer wearing rubber shackles that don't connect so he can run without falling on his face? Or 4. Someone who finds the design likable with no thought of malicious intent by himself or by the designer?

Let us all Ah-Waw Ah-Waw Ah-Waw just a little bit more and maybe we can get just a bit more sympathy.

If that sole coats with big Gold Stars on them. I am guess people would not be writing off the offensive nature of those like they are doing with these shoes.
