Yes I shut off the lights to save energy and money, but I don't gripe at my family if they happen to forget. I just shut them off myself. I'm not helpless! Why have the lights on if you aren't even in the room? Dumb anyway!

Drives me CRAZY my 13 year old step son like refuses to turn off his light and TV. One time I just got finished telling him ot remember to turn it all off.. he didn't and when we got back I took the TV out of his room. He was a little confused but quickly understood!

It all depends. When the sun goes down, we need the light so I won't be a pain about it at night but if you aren't in the room and somewhere else in the house, turn the light off. I keep the majority of my lights off and turn them on when needed.

To do that first would require that I always turned my lights on lol - something, my daughter will attest to, that I rarely do. My eyes are very light sensitive as it is and my vision adjusts very quickly and very well to low light and dark situations. So I often simply don't have the lights on at all. Just to walk around inside a store with too many lights, I have to wear sunglasses - ya - my eyes are that sensitive lol. So - okay - I know I'm probably throwing off the entire bell curve to this poll... oops.

No sense yelling at a 4 year old, I just show her and then we "race" to turn it off.

No, I don't always turn off the lights... and Yes, I use to get chastised by my hubby all the time... but I guess he just got use to turning off the lights behind me and not fighting about it was easier. :)

I can't stand when people leave lights on. I have slowly learned that some people just don't learn, so I don't chastise as often now...

Fef - yep, I'm the same way! I just turn the lights, TV, whatever they have left on if they have left the room off myself. I'm not helpless and frankly get sick of complaining about it! My family knows what they should do, some just don't!

I want to get those motion-sensor light switches at home like we have at work, so the lights go off if they don't detect movement after a while.

Put a nickle jar out, and everytime they forget they have to put a nickle in the jar, they will get it within a week.

Trust me the nickle or quarter jar WILL work. I promise you. Pain in
the pocket will always get the desired results, unless he is too young
to understand the value of money.

He has to earn money...He doesnt get money for good grades, cleaning his room..etc etc..that is expected of him.. He earns money..working in the yard or just whatever we can come up with for him.He saved his money from yard work last week and spent it at the movies with his brother..He has to earn more now before I can do the jar thing..or it's going to be money out of my pocket. But I'll go now and hit him with the ideal..and then..it's lights out for the night..It's his bedtime and I'm pooped :)) I'll let you know what he thinks about it hehe.

Did you ever use a quarter or nickle jar?
That was how I learned about turning out the lights, I caught on real quick.

We are all pretty good about turning our lights off and we have a motion detector for the light in the bathroom. That makes things easier if a two AM trip becomes necessary.

But my husband often asks me if we are putting the NSTAR kids through college. He is the one the is energy conservative.
