A 10-year-old girl dies on a Hide-and-seek game. Is it the parent's fault?

SAM 2007/09/24 16:06:32
Yes, parents should check on what their children are doing more often.
No, they're parents never thought for her to die while playing Hide-and-seek. Besides she was 10 not a toddler.

Allison Ireland, 10, of Roseville, was playing hide and seek Saturday with her cousins when she got tangled in a belt inside of the closet of her home.

Family members said she possibly hung herself as she jumped off a box.

Her 3-year-old cousin discovered her.

"We heard him saying, 'Wake up, wake up, Ally. I want to play. I'm here, wake up, Ally.' And he came out and said, 'she won't wake up,'" said Heather Eisler.

"It is a shock. It is a shock. It's the worst thing that could happen. My mom could not even hold her head up," sister Alyssa Eisler said. "It's the worst thing that has ever happened in my life."

I voted no. It sounds like a freak accident. I have heard of stuff like this happening when kids play hide and seek, they try to hide in old freezers, or refrigerators and get trapped in them, some suffocate even. I don't know how this happened, how do you get caught up in a belt?Either way, I'm sure the parents feel horrible as it is.

Accidents with children can happen in the blink of an eye, but I think I'd make sure I didn't have any more belts hanging in my closets-seems a bit odd.

Well yes and no. Yes because you should know where your children are and you should check on them just to see where they are and if they're okay.
No because there are accidents that happen that you can't really prevent. There are some things that you just wouldn't expect to happen. Plus, the parents probably already blame themselves for it, so you don't need to add to their guilt.

these answers both have extremly good points.
but this story makes me want to cry, poor girl she had a whole future ahead of her.
the parents should check on her but they couldnt expect it.
and who would ever think their child, the little ones, their little girl would die from hide and seek? :(

parents need to set boundaries to where their kids are allowed to play. i wouldnt say it is thier fault but they need to make sure thier kids know where a safe place is to play. i know when i was young i was watched like a hawk, it was annoying yeah but i did some dangerous things and if my parents didnt constantly watch me i could be dead right now.

This sounds like a freak accident to me. Who would have ever guessed something like this would happen playing an age old game like hide-n-seek. It is still a question though, as to how she got the belt around her neck.

This is a tragedy,I feel for her parents .Why would her parents feel responsible for something they had no control over?I know there are always questions in the minds of parents when they lose a child, or any loved one. If only?? Yet they don't see the big picture because their pain is so deep. The pain of knowing that they will never see the smiles ,hear the laughter, feel their touch is unbearable. But they don't want to hear that this is Gods will, so they take the blame when in reality nothing else anyone says or does can heal their broken heart. My sister losted her baby daughter at 23 months old in July of this year. My heart is forever changed. I can not take her pain or ease her mind , I can only listen to her cries ,and be there for when she needs me. My prayers are sent to this family ,and may they find some kind of peace in their lives

parents should keep a tab on their children at all times, but when you know what they're doing - especially when playing hide-n-seek - you just dont think they could possibly get killed.

How on earth could that be the parents fault?
    it's hide & seek.
everyones played it at one time.
it's not usually a game you have to be carefull at.
sure every now & then someone falls while running or w/e
but hey i fall just walking up stairs.
kid shouldn't have been in the closet.
parent should have kept the belt in better place
maybe they should have set ground rules for the game like my parents used to....
no going outside, parents bed room, near the hot tub or in the pool room.

    wow.....

it is ridiculous to put the blame on the parents. i know the parents and they are wonderful, honest, loving parents, who did and still do every thing that they can for all of their children. this was a freak accident, a tragic death of a wonderful child who brought much joy to everyone that met her. i think that anyone who puts the blame on these parents have no sympathy or compassion for any of them. they are devestated with this horrific incident and for anyone to say they could have changed it is wrong.

freak accident, someone can die from suffication in under a minute and you can't expect parents to keep checking on them every few seconds.

If the child died in an old fridge or freezer (as you so often hear about) I would say yes because parents should know that you take the doors off old appliances. Or check on them more often if they are playing outside where they cant be seen or heard. But you would never think a child would die hiding in a closet. Come on! How many times have you played hide-n-seek as a child?

I certainly don't think they should be blamed. It could happen to any parent out there and, as so many people said, they are going to have to live with this the rest of thier lives as it is. I hope they forgive themselves and get through this will strength to spare.

These people will have to live with this tradgedy for the rest of thier lives. This is not a time for blame but empathy. Accidents do happen no matter how careful a parent is.

I have a 10 year old daughter and this scenario would have never entered my mind.

Sometimes horrible freak accidents happen. These are the type of things you don't want to happen to your kids, but they do happen. Thankfully there is a God and he knows how many hairs are on each of our heads. Sometimes some of us have less hair then others, but that doesn't mean that there is any less love.

i don't think the parents should feel guilty because of a tragic accident to be a parent these days you need to have eyes in the back and sides of your head you just can not watch children all the time especially at 10 you don't expect that to happen in a game of hide and seek we have all played that game and we are still here my heart goes out to the family and may god be with them at this terrible time
