9/11 and Pearl Harbor not included, what is the most memorable historical event to have occurred in your lifetime?

9/11 is probably the most shocking event to have occurred in the past 50 years so I wish to exclude it from this poll and discover what other events have really affected our lifetime.

The assassination of JFK. I remember his funeral, it was also one of the rare moments I saw my parents cry.

I am a young person and to tell the truth, the bombing of Pearl Harbor is ancient history to me. I wasn't even thought of yet!
And 9/11 not included? That is crazy! My mother was in 9/11 and I was living in New York at the time. My mother could have died but she is still alive. I was in kindergarten then too.

How is 911 the most shocking event of the past fifty years? What an absolutely ignorant thing to say!
But I suppose you just meant shocking to Americans huh. Yes, to hell with the rest of the world. Americans don't even know what hardship is!
911 is not even CLOSE to the most people killed in a day within that last fifty years.

Well he lied and continues to lie about his real name...who he really is ... A mystery to us all...he proclaims in his own words several times his Muslim faith....he preaches and acts in a communist manner...he continues to change our government towards a dictator state.... The man in my eyes should be arrested for many different direct violations and crimes against this country...crimes had you or I committed we would face serious penalty so i feel he is not above the law...the man wants to sign a law that gives the UN rights to take our weapons away from us....he is bad for this country in every way .... And always faithful....to this country.

I have been thinking about this overnight. Two events stand out because I saw both of them on television. The Challanger disaster, and Neal Armstrong's walk on the moon.

The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. There was nothing our government engineers and scientists could do but watch oil gush on TV for days on end. The damage can't be quantified in terms of ecology, economics and security. And it can happen again! Yay or nay?
