Yes, his parents should've known that something was wrong.
No, children don't know how to talk to their parents about their problems.

Montana Lance, a 9-year-old boy hung himself in the school restroom of Stewart's Creek Elementary School. Lance asked the school nurse if he could use her restroom. "He locked himself in the bathroom, and he has done this before," school secretary Cheryl Smith said. The school nurse unlocked the door and found Montana Lance hanging from the ceiling of the restroom. She tried to revive the him but "there's no heartbeat. Oh, my God."

People close to Montana Lance and investigators still don't have answers as to why he would take his own life.

Sometimes you can read the signs sometimes they are very subtle. That's my impression as a retired pedi/adolescent psych nurse. Sometimes the ones that give you lots of warning just don't follow through with suicide....they want help and act out to get it, thankfully.
Some kids are just quiet about it. They really want to die and don't want anyone to prevent it.
    It's so very sad.
Locking yourself in a bathroom is a flag but kids do that sometimes when they are upset and want to be alone so it's a judgement call.
My sister-in-law works at this school. They are devastated about this poor little kid.

that when people are in that kinda pain they dont want others to know. if they wanted people to know then they would have sought help. its also possible the parents are why the kid killed himself.

The child may not be able to trust or confide in his parents at the same time as his parents may not have known what was going on because perhaps they were too busy with their own lives to be paying attention to their child.

sometimes you can tell if a person is feeling depressed and people couldve talked to him

I think it is sometimes impossible to know what kids are thinking... two of my sons are just now telling me horror stories from their junior high days... I just freak at how close they came to some really bad dicisions in their lives....

This is a very difficult to judge. Children are very adept at hiding their pain and it is often difficult to tell when something is wrong. The parents must be in a lot of pain at the moment and judging them is really not going to help them.

most people don't notice the signs until they're looking in hindsight. sometimes they are openly visible, but other times you don't see anything at all.

They need to start reopening the asylums instead of just giving a kid, or an adult for that matter all kind of pills. When I was a kid in school there was another kid in my class who was always depressed and mad it seemed. He ended up failing the 6th grade and made it to the 8th grade before finally dropping out. Then he started getting in trouble with the law. Everything from burglary to DWI. Later on I heard he had murdered his mother in an attempt to steal money for drugs. He put a pillow over her head and then set the house on fire. Well, the autopsy showed she didn't have smoke in her lungs and had been killed before the fire was started. They ended up sending him to the state pen. I have no idea where he is now. But if the system had put him in some kind of insane asylum when he was a kid, things might have been a lot different for him and his family.

I have no idea!! They don't even insinuate a reason whatsoever, so how can I know if someone should've known anything? I don't think anyone can assume anything until we get some facts here...
It is incredibly sad, for all involved.... Poor little boy.... I cry because there are other kids who are going through hardships that people close to them have no idea that something's even wrong.
His parents are probably blaming themselves right now.

The kid was probably either on or had stopped taking his psychotropic drugs, as the number one side effect for anti depressants is thoughts of suicide and the Big Pharma's are pushing that crap like the Drug Dealers they are! Google this story later and I bet you he has taken these anti depressants before...

Suicide is hard to identify in a lot of people. It's much harder to see in children with bipolar disorder or manic depression. My parents didn't see any signs of my being clinically depressed until my dad came home right after I od'd on a bottle of Tylenol. Sometimes, no matter how loving and attentive a family is they just can't fix a mental disorder.

its horrible that at only nine someone even considered suicide...let alone executed it.
I mean at that age they should be swapping pokemon and just starting to notice boobies, not deciding the world is a horrible place they must escape.

I just saw a documentary HBO about children with bipolar disorder. These children started threatening suicide at the age of five years old. Some now teenagers have tried suicide multiple times.

Early diagnosis is the key to helping these children. The suicide could have been prevented if everyone in this country took mental illness seriously and knew the sings of depression, bipolar and other mental disorders. I'm sure the parents had not idea their child had a problem. These kids keep their thought to themselves thinking they will get in trouble or be misunderstood if they speak out. EDUCATION on mental illness is needed now.

yes. bipolar is definitely a problem. my sister in law was repeatedly raped by her grandfather for years. Told her parents and they said she lied and blamed her. is is also bipolar and suicidal. i hope she doesn't murder her kids and husband someday.

Sounds like this kids parents really let him down. I mean this kid would have had to have looked up ways to kill himself...you wouldn't think a 9 year old would know how otherwise.

This is another reason parents should know everything a child is doing.

For a young kid whose basic physical needs ,assumed, are not the problem. His psychological needs absence ? Love maybe missing. Cause maybe: divorce, selfish parents on drugs, koolaid . Or simply ,a case of an innocent child who has been put on anti depressant drug since childhood on the advice of some idiotic doctor.

Actually it is none of the above. More than likely the boy had clinical depression or bipolar disorder and no one in the school or at home knew the signs that this child had a mental disorder. Some children with depression or bipolar disorder start talking about suicide at the age of five and in one case a four year old.

Agreed -- and I'm glad that someone else noticed and commented. Putting aside the egregious grammatical gaffe, I found the story incredibly sad. I have no answers -- just my condolences. I've got two wonderful daughters (older than that poor boy), and I hope and pray that they'll always be able to weather life's vicissitudes.

Thanks for the kind words. Really, it just strikes me that (no surprise here) life can be very rough indeed, for kids and others. But I really wish there were adequate words to offer some tangible condolence to the families of children who've traveled that tragic route.

Thanks so much for your great input. It is true sometimes you can tell and sometimes you can't. My brother was bipolar and he use to talk about suicide but back then we didn't know abut depression and bipolar disorder and other mental illness in kids. My brother finally committed suicide at the age of 52. Depression is a serious deadly disease.
