The recession and slow recovery have kept unemployment above 8 percent. Employers refuse to hire new employees in times of uncertainty. Many employers have laid off or reduced their workforce to avoid bankruptcy during the recession. Has this led to fewer employees working harder and longer hours?

Techcrunch reporter Sarah Perez reveals how 80% of the workforce works longer hours equaling an extra day of work per week. Do you think the recession has forced fewer employees to work more hours?

Since our dramatic cut backs a few years ago, I work 10-12 hour days and about every other weekend. Of course the city, county, state and Feds could care less as they pile even more regulation, fees, and fines on top of small businesses.

I am 16 and just left school I live in southampton uk, and I have been in practically every shop in southampton to apply for jobs, they all have said the same thing 'I can't work for them because I haven't got any experience in retail, kitchens etc.) I am fed up because I no of people who have been to uni to study law degrees, teaching etc, and still get turned down for a job, for instance my cousin has just come out of uni as a dr and has been forced into working minimum wage at some retail shop !!! This is outragous the GOVERNMENTS and BANKS need to sort this out because how do they expect us to come of benefits and work if they're not doing anything about It! If this keeps going on the way it has been uk, us etc, are going to go the same way as greece which Is a dissapointment. Why should we have to suffer for they're mistakes!!!! So the answer to you're question is yes!

It's hard not to work more hours when bills need to be paid whether the economy is good or not.

This is a long history in America. Americans worked more jobs, more over time to get the extras they wanted, not necessarily needed. There were those Americans who had to work extra hours, extra jobs just to survive.

That is true, but hopefully this recession has taught some people some lessons. I know I learned a few things.

nope. anyone who thinks this is true wasn't paying attention 6 years ago, 8 years ago, 10 years ago. I know I read newspaper and magazine articles that were talking about exactly this phenomenon years before the bottom fell out of the economy.

It forces people to work more, and work longer hours for less money, and hell on you if you complain or ask for a raise. There will always be some one who is willing to work for less money, and for less benefits until they are not willing anymore and then they will complain and then they will be gone.

When a Capitalistic System becomes so greedy, laborers over produce for companies, earning such companies huge profits. In return such companies do not pay employees a fair wage for the amount of production produced. What is worse, such corporations then inflate prices onto consumers, taking advantage furthering higher profits for themselves.

In my work, we are often requested to work overtime to replace the cutbacks in personel.

We are often reminded if we don't comply, there are others ready willing & able to replace us all.

that is the way it goes every where and guess what now that corporations know they can get by with less workers, and make the same amount of profit they will not be in a hurry to hire anyone.

When Europeans first came to America, they had to work very long hours for small wages. Many worked long hours sewing in N.Y.C. garment district. That is Capitalism, a profit making system for corporations. Capitalists don't pay their labor a fair share of their worth. These Europeans also did not get free govt. benefits such as food stamps, welfare, college loans, HUD Housing, etc. A Socialistic System was meant to help Americans through crisis, but the system was abused.

This is not only a current trend in the United States. The U.S. has never had a steady economy. Cutbacks, having to work overtime was a part of many generations. Only in earlier years extended families helped each other out.

I used to do a lot of overtime but my company is making a lot less so I'm working about 7 hours a day now instead of 8 or 9... this is normal though in a slower economy, the average French work day is about 6 or 7 hours, so it doesn't bother me, I actually enjoy having more time to enjoy the day.

I agree... a job's purpose is to provide to you basic necessities to live. There is no point in life if you're living for a job. That's a sad unfulfilled human being, he may have a nice car or a nicer house but him having them is temporary, they'll be here long after he has a heart attack and dies because he spent his life behind a computer instead of going for more walks.

Obama is a failure. His anti business policies destroy jobs. Your cute little racist rant is nonsense. Until you idiot democrats can explain how higher taxes, paying people to be lazy and not work, higher regulations, overpowerful trial lawyers, overpowerful unions that cost $450 and 4 different workers to change a light bulb, higher energy costs, higher health care costs, and a give everyone a trophy and pass incompetent students mentality is in any way good for the economy, you really have no substance at all.

Every democrat policy is bad for jobs, bad for the economy, and bad for everyone willing to actually work to get ahead. The only people it is good for is the lazy entitlement junkies that choose to live off the backs of others that shrink the economic pie for everyone.

The democrats only REAL argument is that it is ok to destroy the economy, country, burry our children in debt, and take away people's freedom so that perfectly able bodied people do not have to take responsibility for themselves. So, let’s be honest and argue your case on its merits.

All democrat 'progressive' policies have gotten us is massive debt, a weak economy, a credit downgrade, jobs fleeing in droves, and a whole class of lazy unappreciative entitlement junkies. We need to simply admit that...

We need to simply admit that they are failed policies and kick the democrats out. While the same failed policies have bankrupt Europe and Europe is running from them, the idiot democrats are still pushing for them here. Are they oblivious and greedy for other people's private property, or intentionally trying to destroy the country?

Anyone can be successful. Immigrants come here every day uneducated, broke, and unable to even speak English and have a far higher success rate than Americans born here that are too lazy to even take advantage of a free HS diploma. We need to stop all this democrat whining and blaming others and start expecting able bodied people to actually work and support themselves, live everyone else does, and every generation has done throughout the history of the country.

Affirmative Action which was not created under President Obama, forced companies to hire far less qualified over more intelligent, highly trained competent people. It was a free give away program for the lazy. That was not equal rights. Affirmative Action is discrimination.
