8-Year-Old Kills Father After Teaching Him How To Use Gun: Do you think that children should be allowed to handle guns?

Peter Griffin November 10, 2008 20:06:53

The man who was shot to death by his own son has been laid to rest today at St. Johns, Arizona. The 8-year-old boy is scheduled to appear in court later Monday. He is charged with using a .22 caliber hunting rifle to kill his father Vincent Romero, 29, and a co-worker Timothy Romans, 39, who rented a room in the house. Police say they see no reason why the son committed this act, there was also no indication that the boy has been abused. Under Arizona law, the boy can be charged as an adult. The Romero family, were active hunters who at some point taught him how to handle a gun. Officials say that they are shocked on how the boy managed to load and handle guns at very young age, it was obviously not his first time. This tragic story could have been prevented.

Yes. Children at this age ___ should be allowed to handle guns.

This is a perfect example of knee-jerk reactions, and people making decisions based on their emotions and not reality, and not the average.

I was taught to use guns at the age of 14, and I have several friends who were taught between ages 6 and 10. None of us have ever had any problems, we all act responsibly, and gun safety is the highest priority.

It's 2nd Amendment right, and I am disgusted with people who want to control laws that infringe on the activities of other families. I can't believe that any American would think they are sane in trying to control the people around them by abusing and manipulating the legal system.

The above is a failure on behalf of the parents to properly instruct and instill a proper safety-first mindset into the child. They put too much garbage in, and got a big problem out.

Truth be known, I'll probably buy my kids their first rifles at age 10.

I was 10. Had gun safety drilled into me starting at age 8. My parents were born and raised in Buffalo Valley and SilverPointe Tennessee. Although I was born and raised in a Detroit suburb (yuk), I look forward to flying down there to stay with my aunts and cousins every chance I get. I certainly have their accent down as I grew up hearing nothing but southern accents. All of my parent's friends were from the south. They came to Detroit to work for one of the Big 3.
Shame huh? My mama and daddy would be rolling over in their graves if they knew how badly the American car companies are doing right now.

Anyway...just wanted to send a reply-loved your comment but with kids the way they nowadays (up north anyway), I can't decide. I've got a 2nd cousin who started learning to shoot at 8. For Parker, it was the perfect age. He lives with both of his parents in my Aunt and Uncle's house. It's on 150 acres down in a hollow. I honestly believe that based on how your parents and grandparents have made a positive influence on your life, it determines how each child will behave accordingly.

You can't ban guns then everyone that shouldn't have them will get guns illegally anyways so it just makes things worse

it does not make things worse i lived in europe for almost all my life and they dont have guns there not as many people get killed innocently and even if people smuggle guns illegally into the country they get sent to jail for it

Yeah you're forgetting the difference between Europe and the United States. It just wouldn't work here. They get sent to jail if they're caught by the way and self defense is a justifiable reason to have a fire arm in the home.

Not an easy question to answer. I was taught as a child how to handle guns but along with it, the safe use of guns, their purpose etc. The primary issue here is apparently the father took no safety issues by making sure the kid could not gain access to the gun. Responsible gun ownership.

Age 12..at least in this state, that is how old they have to be to go to gun safety class.

I was not around guns growing up, so, my children were not either.

My hubby was a police officer, so, as an occupational "hazard" he had a gun in the home, but, he was raised to hunt and fish, he raised his children that way also. He taught all of them to respect guns, to understand guns and sent them all to the class so that they heard it from some one other than dad.

Teaching a child competently about the use of guns is more important than age. I recall my dad bringing my brother and I outside once after halloween, and he brought out the guns, and he blew the old jack o'lanterns to bits. After he was done, he turned to my brother and I and said, "If you touch my guns when I'm not around, that's going to happen to you." And it was a good warning. I did shoot some of my dad's guns when I was 8-9, but not once did I dare touch them if he wasn't there. And when I held them, he showed me how to do it safely. It's not a matter of age, it's the manner in which the lesson is taught. My dad taught us respect for the weapon.

A dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp Knife, and someone who doesn't know how to safely handle a knife is dangerous to everyone around it.
Do you teach a child how to put out a fire with the estingusher, and how to dial 911. Do you teach them not to play with electricity, or Dads Power tools?

That kid needs thearpy, his dad should have kept the guns locked up, and the bullets somewhere else. Guns don,t kill people, people kill people. How come they don't report all the other ways people get murdered by a family member? Always picking on the Gun.

Anything that you make taboo is what your kids are going to be interested in. That's why so many very religious kids drink and do drugs and get knocked up their first week of college.
There is nothing wrong with teaching a child how to use a weapon, but with it, you also need to instill in them the responsibility that comes with holding said weapon.

Children should not be allowed to handle weapons. it's just to dangerous . I know alot of people don't agree with me but I am just stating my opinion. I feel with a gun it's one mistake that can't be erased. If someone is hurt or killed it's to late to "fix it" . Children are not capable of thinking out things like adults. I have a friend who accidentally shot his brother that was two and he is tormented with it, He was six.

No. No children should be taught to handle armed weapons.

Why does a child need to be taught to handle a gun? What logical reason is there for an 8 year old to be shown how to shoot something/anything? If a dad wants to bond with his son, take him to a sports event, why do they have to 'kill' something. Young children don't have the maturity to understand what a gun can do. As for this 8 year old, there has to be something more going on here. His life couldn't be as perfect as they're trying to paint it, something caused him to snap. In response to the original question? NO, NO, NO is my answer.

8 is a little young for gun use in my opinion, but many children see and do thing before their time successfully. This is by no means the first time a situation like this has happened, parent heave a responsibility to safe guard against such things and there are many safe options. I fond it strange that there is not more to this story… Maybe there is.

Maybe not a .50 caliber handgun but more in line with his age. A BB gun or a .22 might be nice. There's more to the story than is being told, unless he's a psychopath in training.

Yes. Children at this age ___ should be allowed to handle guns.

I don't think there is a specific age, but if you keep guns in your home the children who live there need to be taught age appropriate gun safety. In this case it sounds as if the child was disturbed somewhat, but the parents are responsible because they should have had the guns locked up for transport, or locked up for storage.

I was target shooting with my dad and uncles when I was 8 or 9 and it was a fun time. I don't think it should be outlawed because one parent paid a fatal penalty for not locking his guns when not in use.
