Ugh, this never works. You'll just end up buying more the next day.
How about on August 8th, 2012, everyone buys a bike or a bus pass or joins a carpool? Then continue that behavior for the rest of your life. That would really send a message.
I like that people are willing to "move" for what they believe, but I'm not sure what the complaint is. The price of oil is to do with OPEC (oil producing and exporting countries)
not what we call "oil" companies, which are really energy companies, since they don't just deal in oil. The price of oil is determined globally by several factors. Our govt has little control over the price unless they slapped higher taxes on it at the pump.
I will participate. It doesn't matter what the naysayers here are saying. If people get their gas the day before or the day after, the point is that they make a statement. I'm there with ya!
Okay, then do what you wish... no one is forcing you. However, it most certainly DOES make companies notice and they do care when they see that people will band together to make a point. Sometimes, just tell the companies what one thinks en masse can make a huge difference. Go ahead and sit on you laurels, though. Make sure you are comfy.
It won't make oil and gas companies bat an eye. At the end of the day, you still need their product. If you really want to make a statement, buy a bike, use public transit or join a carpool. Do that today and for the rest of your life, then they will have lost a customer. That, if done by enough people will make a difference. But, what will most likely happen, is as consumption goes down, gas prices will go up. A barrel of oil needs to sell for at least 70 dollars/barrel in order for the companies to cover their costs plus profit, this is according to OPEC.
In the first months of this year, Exxon (XOM, Fortune 500) says it paid $3.1 billion in taxes in the United States -- more than even the $2.6 billion in profit it made selling oil and gas.
Early in year. They don't get a subsidy they pay less in taxes. They employ thousands. Do you hate big oil? Do you hate profit or do you hate capitalism?
They start wars, kill thousands and you're waving their flag. They temporarily destroyed the sea around New Orleans , Cancun, Valdez. The highest cancer pocket in the US is jut down wind from the Exxon plant in Linden NJ. So throw them $4B a year for all their good work. Hooray for big oil.
