58 Percent of High School Seniors Text and Drive: Do You?

Did you catch the "Glee" episode earlier this year, when Quinn nearly paralyzed herself by texting and driving? As usual, the show was touching on an important issue.

An anonymous national survey conducted last year found that 58 percent of high school seniors said they had texted or emailed while driving during the previous month, according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 43 percent of high school juniors admitted to the same dangerous behavior.

text messaging

"A lot of teens say 'Well, if the car's not moving and I'm at a stoplight or I'm stuck in traffic, that's OK,'" Amanda Lenhart, a senior researcher at the Pew Research Center in Washington who has done focus groups with teens on the topic, told The Associated Press.

Other teens say they know it's not safe, but think it's safer if they hold the phone up so they can see the road and text at the same time, Lenhart told the AP. Pretty scary to think of all those distracted teens behind the wheel ... do you text and drive?

No way! I've seen too many accidents and near misses caused by idiots texting. It's not just teens either.

A text isn't worth potentially killing yourself (or even the passenger) over. If it's so important, pull over to the side and park the car, and THEN answer the text or call. Common sense.

I won't lie I text when I'm stopped at a light or something my girlfriend usually screams at me if I do. I know it's bad but other than that I'm a safe driver never had a ticket or accident.

It's so stupid to do so. Texting can wait. I was driving with someone who was texting, she almost didn't look up in time. We were in a small car and the guy in front of us was a large tractor trailer, we almost slid under him.

Its irresponsible to text and drive. While you are driving your phone should be on silent and out of your reach to resist temptation. If you need to text or call someone pull over/in somewhere and text/call them. Otherwise its a hazard to you and to everyone else on the road. You can't be fully focused on driving if your doing something else.

Its called Bluetooth and text by voice app. And if you say that's still a distraction then I hope you have your radio off while driving.

I do have my radio off while I drive. And yes it is still a distraction because you are getting lost in a conversation you are having with someone, instead of focusing on what your doing. Don't matter if you are holding the phone or just using bluetooth.

Well, I just got my permit last week. So no I don't. But besides that I rarely text. I know what you're thinking. "A 15 year old who doesn't text? That's crazy!"

It is crazy, but it's mostly because I don't like talking to people. It gets annoying.

Should be that way everywhere. They tried it here, but I guess was bombarded by a bunch of idiots that thinks it's ok to do it. Just like we used to have a curfew here for kids...now we don't, because parents didn't want one. So if a 6 year old kid is wandering the streets at two o'clock in the morning, it's ok. sad

I would never risk it. If it's that urgent, people tend to call me, and I pull over to answer.

It's a good idea to pay attention around you, even at a stop light. But at least you wait till your stopped to text.

I'm sure telling your friend that you broke a nail is not pressing enough to warrant you texting while in a car.
