58 Percent of High School Seniors Text and Drive: Do You?

Did you catch the "Glee" episode earlier this year, when Quinn nearly paralyzed herself by texting and driving? As usual, the show was touching on an important issue.

An anonymous national survey conducted last year found that 58 percent of high school seniors said they had texted or emailed while driving during the previous month, according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 43 percent of high school juniors admitted to the same dangerous behavior.

text messaging

"A lot of teens say 'Well, if the car's not moving and I'm at a stoplight or I'm stuck in traffic, that's OK,'" Amanda Lenhart, a senior researcher at the Pew Research Center in Washington who has done focus groups with teens on the topic, told The Associated Press.

Other teens say they know it's not safe, but think it's safer if they hold the phone up so they can see the road and text at the same time, Lenhart told the AP. Pretty scary to think of all those distracted teens behind the wheel ... do you text and drive?

No way! I've seen too many accidents and near misses caused by idiots texting. It's not just teens either.

Common sense tells me that the text message, probably isn't worth the risk.

Personally, I think its ok if your at a stoplight or stuck in some sort of bumper to bumper never moving girdlock. But I had to sit through Driver's Ed for two hours not even 2 years ago watching videos of officers pulling bloody remains of people out of cars, ditches, peeling them off the roads... and all these people were texting while driving. So yes, I do text while I drive, but not while I drive... if your following me :P

Except that I use Voice controls to do so. It routes through my BT earpeice, so I can start a text, respond or listen to them without taking my eyes off the road.

I'm that lady that screams out the car window, flips the finger, or says very ugly names at the morons who use their phones while driving. Not a day goes by when I don't catch some idiot yakking away like it's nothing.

No, absolutely not. In Ireland, it's illegal to hold ANYTHING electrical (phone, iPad, eBook, etc) in your hands when in the driver's seat of a vehicle while the engine is on, this includes stopped at a red light for example.

In Nevada it's the law. First offense $50.00 second $100.00 Third $200.00. It's not high enough. The First Offense should be $500.00 and doubled after that. That might get their attention. It's a dangerous habit. in the few second glance the average vehicle travels 100 yards. That could be you in the intersection as it drives over you. Give that some thought. There are apps for all phones which will accept a dictated text, read it back then ask if you want it sent. These apps also read incoming texts to you and ask if you want to reply. No need to take hands off the wheel or eyes off the road.

so you don't think about the person you could mame, injure, or even kill, if run into them. till the to the jogger that was killed by a 17 year old girl where i live recently. she has been brought up on all kinds of charges because she was texting on her phone. now she's bound for prison life because of it. i'm a truck driver and i can't count how many times a day i see near misses because of people texting on their phones. i just hope you don't have to think of what you going to say to some ones family because you killed their dad, mom, son, daughter, etc.... because you where texting on your phone!!!!!!!!

cause he's an idiot, and can't think of where he's at or what he is doing. just like when he says he text and drives. but that's ok because he doesn't care about the other person. he doesn't care what he might put someone's family through when or anyone kills another persons family or friend.

Unlike dim-witted, inexperienced drivers, I have driven for over 25 yrs and in all types of vehicles and have owned at least 20. I have the highest class license and never had a accident that was my fault. I am a defensive driver in the city and never would text in the city.

When I drive, my eyes are on the road. Texting endangers innocent lives, there is no excuse.

Anyone caught Texting should have their liscence suspended for a year. If they are under 18, they should have their liscence suspended for 2 years
