30% of Meat-Eaters Won’t Date a Vegetarian: Would You Date Someone With Different Eating Habits?

According to a recent Love Bites survey by TODAY.com and Match.com, for many, shared dietary preferences are key when making a love connection.

30% of the meat-eaters surveyed said they would not date a vegetarian or vegan. On the other hand, only 4% of the vegetarians said that they wouldn't date a meat-eater. (But keep in mind—only 2% of Americans identify as vegetarian and 3% as vegan. That’s a pretty small dating pool!)

So why won’t these meat-eaters date vegans or vegetarians? 1) Many consider sharing food a very important part of romance and don’t want to be with someone who won’t share those moments. 2) Others dislike feeling judged or pressured to give up meat. 3) Many just don’t like picky eaters; 66% of respondents described that trait as a turn-off. 4) And some view meat-eaters as more "manly."

Yet, many cross-dietary couples are able to accommodate each other’s choices and make the relationship work.

“The ability to accommodate to needs of a new partner is really important – both people have to work at it,” said Dr Helen Fisher, a biological anthropologist and Match.com’s chief scientific adviser. “The vegetarian has to send the message that they can work around it, they can find or bring alternatives to barbecues or family gatherings, and the meat eater has to be willing to bend once in a while as well.”

What about you SodaHeads? Would you date someone with different eating habits?

I've been vegetarian most of my life and every guy i've dated was a meat eater. It's not a big deal at all, i don't get how some people can make such a huge issue out of something so minuscule.

Also, the fact that I refuse to eat a "big juicy steak" shouldn't reflect on my or any other vegetarian's personality.

i am not sure what worked for you. but either, someone don't care or they are nagging you to death about it. Because non-smoker hate smokers. vegetarians in my opinion are not healthy. I am not a big meat eater as i grow my own vegetables and have many citrus and grapes but i balance my diet. I don't see what is gained by it.

Not all non-smokers hate smokers, and the people that do must be miserable with all that hate.

LOL you are joking right you must be a smoker and anyone that does not smoke and is with a smoker and they say they don't mind is lying for some reason. All non smokers hate smokers and it should be band. It does society no good except to raise insurance premiums and hurt family when they have to take care of someone with cancer it could be avoided. Airhead fits you.

See, you are wrong to generalize. I do not smoke, but I am not a fanatic about a little smoke coming my way. now, I would not let someone smoke in my house or car, but these laws that make smokers not be able to smoke in a park or in their homes are wrong.
  • lori Lucy 2012/07/09 11:39:15

That smoke that is coming your way could cause you to get cancer and suffer and die. Second hand smoke is more deadly then the person smoking., Maybe you should visit a cancer ward and see what the smokers that are lying them dying have to say. Anyone that stands then and lets someone blow the smoke in there face is nuts. Smoking should not be allowed in anyplace the public is. There are children and people that suffer from asthma it is deadly and other lung illness. I wish you the best and hope your future is bright.

I think it would depend on the vegetarian... if they're rabid about it, and going to try to "convert" me, then no, I couldn't make a relationship work with them, but if they're a live-and-let-live kind of person, I'd be fine with it, and I'd probably even eat more veggies because if it :D

No. I should add that while I find vegetarians and vegans (particularly vegans) preachy and somewhat annoying at times, my reasoning is not because of that. I find that a good amount of what me and my wife do revolves around food; going out to eat, backyard barbecues, cooking together, and other things. The fact that wife shares the same love of a good steak is a good thing, it may seem small but I do believe it would be different if she didn't.

Well, Adam, I am surprised it would make a difference. My husband who likes meat and I, who is vegetarian, go out to eat and have a fine time. He can eat anything he wants and so can I. It causes absolutely no problems.

Thats fantastic for you, but somehow I doubt it would be amazing for us. We like meat. Going to a steakhouse wouldn't be the same if all she could have was vegetables and salad

i would never even hang out with a vegetarian if by choice. most are in the mind trap of peta and i'll especially never be with vegans who won't even eat dairy products. one vegan coworker of my friend according to the friend has the worst gas ever and every day is a fart festival with this person

A vegetarian friend of mine used to date a boy who LOVED eating meat. She even took him to a BBQ Grill restaurant once. The manager bought some vegetarian food just for her, because he was so impressed that a vegetarian would do such a nice thing for her boyfriend.

It would greatly depend. If I dated a vegetarian who constantly made bad comments about my eating meat, then the relationship is not going to work. If the other person on the other hand respects my choice of diet and I respect theirs, then it will be a different story.

Yeah. Pretty much the only problem I'd have with it would be if he constantly nagged at me to stop eating meat or give me dirty looks everytime I order a steak or hamburger. That and the fact that I think it's harder to try to "cook" for them. I wouldn't have the first clue about what they could or could not eat.

I think it's a bit of a turn off if your date keeps commenting on the scent of your food.

my cousins wife is vegan and my cousin eats meat. she commented to me once that though she hates the smell of meat she has to get over it to cook for him. i lost all respect for my cousin at that point. he wanted to eat it, he could cook his own food. i didn't have much respect for him in the first place though.
kinda like the guy in the picture there. he's making a face because his wife or girlfriend is handing him a piece of lettuce. for one I've never seen veg. people that go around eating straight lettuce but whats to stop him from firing up a grill and making himself a steak or a burger? he's got 2 hands. I've been cooking my own food since i was old enough to do so and I've never complained about the food someone else has put in front of me.

Well it's just selfish to make someone cook you meat if you know they really hate the smell. As long as he can eat his food inside the house without her complaining he should be happy enough, but he should not demand that she cooks it for him.

i agree whole heartedly. people are free to be veg or to be meat eaters and their business. i don't support useless killing, you kill it, you eat it (except for bugs and mice of course). oh yeah he married my high school crush. i wanted to grab something, walk over the couch and hit him with it. he's one of those types who wants food on the table when he gets home even though its not a single income house. i speak first hand though from being someone who use to be vegan and only went to eating meat because the doctor had me knock out carbs from my diet and it was eat meat or shrink away to nothin, when you don't eat meat for a long time, meat smells bad and the texture of it raw is gross.
