30% of Meat-Eaters Won’t Date a Vegetarian: Would You Date Someone With Different Eating Habits?

According to a recent Love Bites survey by TODAY.com and Match.com, for many, shared dietary preferences are key when making a love connection.

30% of the meat-eaters surveyed said they would not date a vegetarian or vegan. On the other hand, only 4% of the vegetarians said that they wouldn't date a meat-eater. (But keep in mind—only 2% of Americans identify as vegetarian and 3% as vegan. That’s a pretty small dating pool!)

So why won’t these meat-eaters date vegans or vegetarians? 1) Many consider sharing food a very important part of romance and don’t want to be with someone who won’t share those moments. 2) Others dislike feeling judged or pressured to give up meat. 3) Many just don’t like picky eaters; 66% of respondents described that trait as a turn-off. 4) And some view meat-eaters as more "manly."

Yet, many cross-dietary couples are able to accommodate each other’s choices and make the relationship work.

“The ability to accommodate to needs of a new partner is really important – both people have to work at it,” said Dr Helen Fisher, a biological anthropologist and Match.com’s chief scientific adviser. “The vegetarian has to send the message that they can work around it, they can find or bring alternatives to barbecues or family gatherings, and the meat eater has to be willing to bend once in a while as well.”

What about you SodaHeads? Would you date someone with different eating habits?

I've been vegetarian most of my life and every guy i've dated was a meat eater. It's not a big deal at all, i don't get how some people can make such a huge issue out of something so minuscule.

Also, the fact that I refuse to eat a "big juicy steak" shouldn't reflect on my or any other vegetarian's personality.

Unless there is a legitimate health reason, I would not date a vegan.

    Misguided self-righteousness is not sexy.

I could date someone who is vegetarian but probably not vegan. Only because I don't know any vegan recipes and there are few vegan places out my way that are pretty decent or worth the money.

One of the things humans like to share in a relationship is food. Being with someone that is retarded about the things they eat would be an obstacle that I would choose not to deal with.

Why wouldn't you respect their choices? Love is about being tolerant of others.

As long as we're responsible for our own food and he isn't an "I don't eat meat because they're slaughtered animals. You should be ashamed of yourself" kind of person.

If we're talking (I like it spicy he likes it mild) then maybe but when talking about (I eat meat-I don't eat meat cos meat eaters hate animals or that's yuk) It's too much of a hassle honestly...dating maybe but marrying hell no!!!

I don't wanna be cooking twice..

I do like vegetarian type food, and if we'd make dinner I could always cook a little hamburger or something if I wanted some meat. What I wouldn't date is someone who bitched at me for 'killing the animals'...

I like to cook, so it would be a challenge for me to find and prepare dishes for her. When I cook for vegetarians or vegans, i am careful not to mix or use the same utensils for the meat dishes and the non-meat dishes. A very important procedure to remember.

You are very nice, but I, being a vegetarian, is not so fussy as to worry if a little meat juice or something gets into my food.

Many vegetarians I've known tend to be a little smug and condescending about their lifestyle choice. It would depend, I guess. Maybe on how hot she was?

Where is the study on whether or not vegetarians will date meat eaters? The uppity vegetarians I've known are the ones who look down on meat eaters and get openly disgusted and rude when you order a steak in front of them.
