Amid inspirational talk, chanted mantras and shouts of victory at a late-night firewalking event attended by thousands Thursday came agonized shrieks from followers whose soles were scorched by the superheated coals, witnesses said.

At least 21 people were treated for burn injuries after taking part in the crowning event of the first day of a Tony Robbins function downtown, including at least three who went to the hospital, a San Jose fire captain said.

The people who suffered various second- and third-degree burn injuries were among more than 6,000 who attended the motivational speaker's event at the San Jose Convention Center called "Unleash the Power Within."

After the event, which ended about 11 p.m., the crowd walked across the street to the park, where 12 lanes of hot coals measuring 10 feet long and 2½-feet wide rested on the grass.

Jonathan Correll, 25, decided to check out what was going on when "I heard wails of pain, screams of agony." He said one young woman appeared to be in so much pain "it was horrific."

"It was people seriously hurting, like they were being tortured," he said. "First one person, then a couple minutes later another one, and there was just a line of people walking on that fire. It was just bizarre, man."

Correll, a San Jose City College student, said he saw between 10 and 15 people being treated. He said he videotaped the scene for about 5 minutes before an event staffer
told him to put the camera away.

Unless there's safety equipment to make sure nothing drastic happens, NO. I know enough about natural selection to know what plans it has in store.

I'm unsure as to how to respond due to the wording. I would (and have) done dangerous things of my own volition. However, I have been through two in-depths psychological evals which indicate that I would not be swayed to do something just because someone told/tells me to do so.

Of that I have always been certain. ; ) I had no question at all about the leader/follower standpoint. The question you posed was whether or not one can be convinced to do a dangerous act by others... Here is why I had a bit of difficulty answering. For instance, I hate, loathe, despise standing on the precipice of a manmade height. I can wish to do so, but sometimes need some serious encouragement to actually do it. Is it dangerous? Hell, yes. Do my friends encourage me? Yep. ; ) I was not sure if you were heading in that direction or in the direction of the psychological studies of Stanley Milgram. I was, twice, involved in a similar study to the one he performed and passed with flying colors - well, for me. However, the organization wanted someone who followed orders. ; )

A normal person will not even think of doing a firewalk, under normal conditions.Unless the need to please & get other people's acceptance causes you to override your build in survival tendencies.

To generate a discussion of this unusual human psychological trait is the point of me putting up this blog.To get various points of views from other SH members!

BTW As a side note.SH is now running ads from the same group that did this seminar...lol

That's simply untrue. I'd do a firewalk just to see if I could do it. I've done bungee jumping, walked on coals, was a white water raft guide, have climbed some pretty rough climbs, crossed the Great Sand Dunes in morning to afternoon... I've been to 14K feet. Some people, like myself, like to challenge ourselves. Like I said, I'd likely firewalk, but not because someone (friends or foe) tried to convince me to do so. A lot of my friends are of the "not normal" type. ; )

Depends on the type of act! Anything to do with fire, um, no. Sky diving with proper equipment and all, maybe. Spelunking with someone who knows what they're doing and who knows the area, maybe. Mosh pit stuff, no. It just depends.

The report said it took 90 minutes for everyone to do the walk. Why didn't they just say no after the first person, or maybe first 2 got injured ??

I get a kick out of the responses from people that have never been there or have done this firewalk.I have personally walked the coals 5 or 6 times and had slight blisters one time only.It is not a trick ,or stunt. The reason of walking the coals is not for the act of doing it,but sets in the mind that other things that we at one time thought we could not accomplish, now they are possible. That is what positive thinking is all about.
