20 Percent of Teens Partake in 'Sexting': Should They Face Charges?

Whatever the latest technology is, teenagers will use it to get up to no good. But that doesn't make it any less alarming that nearly 20 percent of high school students partake in sexting, according to a new study.

Donald Strassberg, of the University of Utah, found that nearly 20 percent of high school students (18 percent of males, 17 percent of females) admitted to having sent a sexually explicit image on their cellphone. Almost twice as many said they had received a sexual image on their phone (50 percent of males, 31 percent of females), LiveScience reports.

And here's the really scary part: About 25 percent confessed that when they received a sexually explicit image, they forwarded it to others. Plus, more than 8 percent said they had sent a sexually explicit photo that they took of someone else to a third party.

But here's the thing, kids: You can get into big trouble for doing this. In many states, sending or receiving nude pictures of someone under 18 (including yourself) could put you at risk of facing child pornography charges. Do you think teens who sext should face charges?

stupid question! why do we want MORE government interference in our lives??? poeple will do what they have a drive to do! you can t control nature...just relax!
  • siddart... siddart... 2012/06/21 19:06:56
and its another pointless discussion...how many people will consider the consequences of their actions before hand and not make others clean up their lives for them?? that goes for those who want EVRYTHING regulated cause there are those who wont take responsibility for their OWN lives and those of their kids whom they supposedly have responsibility for and leave others alone to do as they please!
  • delete 2012/06/21 18:20:05
it's illegal isn't it? why is this a discussion?

Of course if their under the legal age they should be charged with child pornography....send your pics when you're 18 kids...

Having your unmentionables in some else's inbox should be punishment enough, no need to kill the messenger for crying out loud!
  • Tere 2012/06/20 22:16:00
i think they should be punished but what type of punishment should they get? i guess it depends on how graphic the picture is. We have 2 teenage boys and never thought to check their phones for sexting, until now I had never heard of it. I suppose for punishment we would take their car away, as for the phone, they would probably just use a friends. out of my sons friends he's the only one with a car, so they would either be walkin or ridin a bus.

I hadn't heard of of it until I saw it on tv

No, I made a mistake and I did not get in trouble, lucky for me. That would have really ruined my rep.
I sent and recieved an image while I was texting one night--it was dumb, but I don't know what came ovr me. Then I got in trouble. But I think being caught sending a sext is embarrasment and punishment enough for some ppl.

How about companies make phones with cameras, and parents make their teens use these?

Technology is a double edged sword. 100 years ago, who would have thought that automobiles would be, potentially, disastrous for our society and our planet? We don't know what exactly the downsides of any given technology will be, but in many, if not most, cases a downside does appear, and so it is with computer technology, communication devices and social media. You can't put the genie back in the bottle, and trying to legislate use of these has as much chance of success as prohibition had of stopping drinking.

If its between a couple it's whatever, their business. However if people r using sexting as a form of sexual harassment or bullying then yes

Under age 18, teens sending photos of their boobs, ass, & just naked are just as bad, as someone sending child porn photos. A teen wouldn't want those photos traded but, they get around faster then baseball cards.

No teens would be teens. Hormones and testasterones are high, teens like to experience and they will. As long as they are both minors and child-pornography doesnt get involve it should be fine
  • lea_bil... Rigo Ra... 2012/10/15 15:03:15
If they are both minors, IT IS considered child-pornography.
  • Tomboy110 2012/06/20 03:45:23
Nope!!! Let them be stupid and sex over texting. (Am I the only that finds that stupid.) Teens have their rights and they should do whatever stupid thing they want while texting.

what standards of life have we tried to reach by allowing teens to break down to their make all the rules
  • Ailat 2012/06/19 20:25:30
It kinda is child pornography, not really a way around that
  • koolkat 2012/06/19 19:23:09 (edited)
I agree that they should wait till 18 where they can maturally deal with it if it gets out instead of getting hurt or in trouble or humiliated. If it spreads around the whole school cause Young teens don't know how to handle a situation like that...

And this charge achieves what exactly? I'm sorry, but giving criminal records to people for something as pathetic as texting when there are people who deserve them much more is mind blowing.

who the hell cares it's their life if they want to do that and someone accidentally sees it they shouldn't be charged for that "little mistake" that happened on Sunday.

They can partake in sexting but only after gaining proper maturity,or at least after reaching the age of 18.

But a lot of people don't wait to have sex till their 18 so realistically that makes 0 sense.

Having sex before 18 is offensive,so for the sake of that should people under 18 be allowed to do another offensive thing?
  • aidennq... Ayushee 2012/06/19 21:07:28
    Really - it's offensive how?
18's just a number some people agreed on, doesn't mean it's a natural rule.
  • Rigo Ra... Ayushee 2012/06/20 03:55:03

How is it having sex under 18 offensive and to whom? Sex is a natural phenomena that shouldnt be regulated, now as a I do agree that having sex with a minor is illegal because minors could be easily manipulated but, what if they're both minors, there is a reason why sex education and condom use is taught at a young age, is inebitable.
  • TomFelt... Ayushee 2012/06/19 22:51:42
    Define: "gaining proper maturity"
Is there some sort of rite of passage that needs to have been achieved in order to be deemed mature by you?
define gaining proper maturity sort rite passage achieved order mature
  • JonDeniro 2012/06/19 18:02:53
Young people do foolish things. Having a criminal record for the rest of their lives over this nonsense serves what purpose?
  • salama_hady 2012/06/19 13:39:03
to stop such wave..yes...otherwise...you encourage the whole society to do that
    free country..yes
