20 Percent of Teens Partake in 'Sexting': Should They Face Charges?

Whatever the latest technology is, teenagers will use it to get up to no good. But that doesn't make it any less alarming that nearly 20 percent of high school students partake in sexting, according to a new study.

sexting

Donald Strassberg, of the University of Utah, found that nearly 20 percent of high school students (18 percent of males, 17 percent of females) admitted to having sent a sexually explicit image on their cellphone. Almost twice as many said they had received a sexual image on their phone (50 percent of males, 31 percent of females), LiveScience reports.

And here's the really scary part: About 25 percent confessed that when they received a sexually explicit image, they forwarded it to others. Plus, more than 8 percent said they had sent a sexually explicit photo that they took of someone else to a third party.

But here's the thing, kids: You can get into big trouble for doing this. In many states, sending or receiving nude pictures of someone under 18 (including yourself) could put you at risk of facing child pornography charges. Do you think teens who sext should face charges?

Harassment or illegal stuff should face charges that are already in place, but do you want government monitoring your phone? That's parents' jobs. Do 15 year olds absolutely NEED phones anyway?

I don't see the big problem here. It won't get them pregnant, they can't get STDs from it.. I think a higher percentage than that partakes in actual sex, so what's the fuss?

The internet is not a shield from the law.

If passing pornographic material between minors is illegal in some States, then those who are caught deserve the consquences of their actions.

There are a lot of laws I don't like, but I still have to obey them.

ITS A GROWING PROCESS AND THEY WILL REGRET IT, WE HAVE TO LET THEM FIGURE OUT AND HOW TO HANDLE IT WHEN IT GETS THROWN BACK IN THEIR FACES BY THEIR KIDS.

No, but perhaps suspend texting privileges for six months- similar to a severe traffic infraction.

I'd say it really depends. If they are doing it because they want to show off, or they are trying to be funny, I'd say that's no different than guys "pantsing" their friends in gym class, or snapping a girls bra strap, back in the days before cell phones, and no one ever got charged with anything in those days.
If they are doing it maliciously, in a stalking manner, or after the recipient has asked them to stop, then I think charges might be in order. Also, if they send an image of someone who asked them not to, I think charges might be in order there. But those should be private civil charges, not criminal, I think.

    charges? are you crazy?

you want to discourage kids getting friendly with each other?
you want to discourage a 21st century mating ritual?

    what are you: anti-human race?

you're going straight into the chokey for that horrible idea!

Charges for what? I think there should be charges against lawmakers with too much time on their hands worrying about what some teenager's doing with their cellphone.

Child porn statutes are passed for the purpose of protecting minor victims. Prosecuting minors under such statutes is contrary to the very purpose of it - it actually creates minor victims.

No but the Government should be fined for not getting our budget balanced and for not minding it's own damn business. We need to fire some sorry people either that or have one huge ass protest. It is getting mighty old that pitiful people that have been elected somehow think they can step into our business. Enough is enough

A long time ago there was a king who had a son with two penises. The King and his son spent their lives looking for a woman with two vulvas for the prince to marry. They unfortunately never found one and the prince died alone. Even in death though the ghost of the prince kept searching for his princess with two vulvas until finally he grew tired of searching for this woman and settled for making love to peoples noses. This is why when people get colds their nose feels stuffed up at first and then gets runny.

my off-the-cuff take on it is: if the messages are not pornographic and sent to age-similar and originally-intended recipients only, then i don't see it being okay that a law be designed to make it criminal and teens being arrested under those circumstances (providing the originator and recipient both agree on the content before transmission takes place); that aside, i certainly wouldn't encourage it and would squash the likelihood of it happening within my household.

I don't text or have a cell, but I thought "sexting" was a word defining sex-related texting, text meaning font characters not images. (?)
