15-year-old gang-raped on voyage to Bahamas  - NY Daily News: Is travel safe for women?

After watching Taken, and other documentaries on women travelling, I would NEVER go alone. :S

Begs the question ..
why was the 15 yr old ALONE at the time (where's the parent/guardian?)

No matter what .. women/men ..
be aware of your surroundings ..
if things do NOT appear or feel 'right' .. do NOT go there .. just get somewhere safe ..
do NOT drink anything that you have no idea what it is ..
(and can't verify the safety)
especially don't drink alcohol (which is used many a time to hide date rape drugs)

It seems like girls are more prone to crime these days, but men are also at a risk too remember that. We can't hire bodyguards just for a trip to the mall, or a grocery store, or even a cruise because stuff doesn't happen as much as the news says it does in my opinion. However, we are all still at risk regardless of race, gender, etc.

It depends on the woman, use common sense, don't invite just anybody to your stateroom. BHe aware of your surroundings, drink responsibly. Act like what I call "using common sense"....that is don't flash cash, jewelry, be too silly!! Don't think about eyeing up the crew !! They have a "new" girlfriend in every cruise !! Word of advice "DON'T GIVE TOO MUCH INFORMATION OUT ABOUT YOUR AT HOME LIFE !! Don't buy other people drinks "too friendly" !! Tell the family back home where you are going, when you are expected back, carry small amount of cash, credit cards, have a friend you travel with. This travel companion can "{sound the alarm" if you go missing from the cruise, HOPEFULLY FAST !!

Yes, let's spend and extra $1 Million executing someone instead of putting them in for life without parole. Waste taxpayer dollars on an outdated method of punishing people rather than rehabilitating them.

You're thinking about punishment, but not about rehabilitation. You're letting short term rage create long term consequences. When prisoners are released, they aren't going to be "Oh god that was so horrible I can't ever go back there". They're going to be "Well I'm out, what the hell can I do now? Stealing sounds easy." When you release a prisoner without training him in a trade, he will likely never get a job again, and will resort to crime, again, to survive. More money needs to be invested into training prisoners rather than punishing them. This is part of the reason of why I hate Texas. They treat executions as some kind of divine punishment on the wicked.

Punishment should be an answer for only the truly depraved criminals. Sociopaths and serial killers. Child molesters and yes, serial rapists. But even then, death isn't the answer, they are the ones who should be put in Texas prisons, (my uncle was in one for a few years, they're absolutely horrible conditions) but still rehabilitated.

We also need to reduce the prison population, but the answer isn't "kill em' all" the answer is keep them from coming back. A large amount prisoners are repeat offenders. We also need to decriminalize gateway drugs and prostitution, and regulate them. All we're doing by making those illegal is creating a black market for criminals to make money.

When someone in the military rapes they don't go to prison, they get hung! Why should a rapist get set free when theirs a chance that he will rape again? Maybe death is not the answer but they do not deserve to be out on the streets. Same goes for child molesters.

Travel isn't safe ALONE, of course you can still run into trouble, but she shouldn't have been alone, and there should have been at least one staff member around!

It depends on the country of orgin, whether in international waters ??If the country of orgin serves minors THEY MIGHT BE SERVED !! When on a foreign vessel THEIR COUNTRIES RULES PREVAIL !!

Not always. Some jerks might take advantage that she's alone in a foreign country, like in this case.

People are incresingly becoming less concerned about committing crimes against others. Travel by women isn't safe. I've seen reports of women being asaulted by men on party boats. The women are outnumbered by these men and don't dare to scream or call out for fear of being murdered or beaten.

Rape, about ninety percent of the time, is committed by someone the person knows. Street rape is very uncommon in the grand scheme of things.
