An exhibition in The Met's Byzantine gallery (AP/Gregory Bull)New
York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) is one of the world's
premier destinations for artistic and historical exhibitions. But this
epicenter of worldly culture is not above admitting the occasional
mistake. Even when the correction comes from one curious 13-year-old
boy.
The Hartford Courant reports that 13-year-old Benjamin Lerman Coady found an error in the Met's Byzantine Gallery during a recent visit. The seventh-grader is a fledgling history buff who recently studied the Byzantine Empire in school.
While checking some of the dates on the map, Coady noticed that sections featuring Spain and Africa were missing.
No one believed him at first, but then his question was forwarded via email to the medieval affairs department for review. A few months later Coady was informed that indeed he was correct.
MY take? I think the kid is a very smart kid ad it is very amusing that he found such a mistake. However, it is a bit sad that a museum of the quality of metropolitan museum of art, did not catch this mistake or examine their display a bit more carefully.

- pdarkow 2012/05/05 07:01:28Funny!!It's funny that a 13 year old boy has the intelligence to know his history well enough to catch the mistake his parents should be very proud to have such an intelligent young man for a son. It is also very sad that a museum with college graduates some with masters and phd's in the subject didn't catch the mistake before it was put on display.reply

- Iamfree 2012/05/04 19:50:06Funny!!+1I find it somewhat hilarious that the so-called "intellectuals" in NYC didn't spot this error before a 13-year-old boy did. I would be interested in knowing where this young man attends school.reply

- DS in Oak Ridge NC 2012/05/04 16:47:39 (edited)BothThe Museum could claim it was an intentional embed of another definition of Byzantine into the exhibit, thinking no one would get it save a few elites or intellectuals (or 13 year olds). Webster lists: a : of, relating to, or characterized by a devious and usually surreptitious manner of operation, as in a Byzantine power struggle, or b : intricately involved : labyrinthine, as in rules of Byzantine complexity.reply
