About Me

My world revolves around my 17 month old son, Adam. Ryan [my partner] and I are doing our best to raise him as a caring and compassionate citizen of the world. Beyond that, I am a 2009 graduate of the University of Memphis with dual concentrations in political science and English. I currently work at a magazine and am looking to get a weekend job as well. In my 'spare time,' I study for the LSAT and plan to enter law school in the fall of 2011.

That would be really fantastic if I could meet Adam Sontag again. * R. i. P. *

The glorious trio of parenting, reading, and writing which occupies virtually all of my time. Beyond that I'm a phenomenal drinker who engages in a multitude of behaviors that probably aren't too healthy. Don't get too excited-- I don't do anything that compromises my ability as a parent. ;)

Unitarian Universalism, Activism, Women's rights, Liberalism, History, Foreign affairs, Travel, Food & Wine, Law, Outdoor activities [especially those involving water], Tattoos & Piercings, Alternative lifestyles, Russian culture, polygamy, cults, religion, addiction, and anything that will land you in therapy.

I'll listen to anything. Punk is my favorite, country is not. Bonus points if it's The Beatles, [old] Everclear, Mickey Avalon, Glassjaw, or 90's alternative.

24, America's Next Top Model [shut up], Big Love, Oz, The Tudors, True Blood...and now that I've finally figured out this On Demand business I'm sure I'll be adding to this list.

American Beauty is my all-time favorite. I'll try and limit this to a top five....Godforsaken, Donnie Darko, Empire Records, Blow, and Boondock Saints, in no particular order.

That is one question I honestly can't answer, there are far too many books I love. I have a wide variety of taste when it comes to literature and the topics about which I read. Some of my favorite authors include Ernest Hemingway, Sylvia Plath, Gwendolyn Brooks, Amiri Baraka, and Chinua Achebe.

"They say you only live once. But if you live like I do, once is enough!!" ~ Frank SInatra

"Just watch your mouth, pretty baby... it's goin' ta get you into trouble one of these days." ~ Ed Bullins

"I'm not a woman, I'm a force of nature." ~ Courtney Love

"Religion is the opiate of the masses." ~ Karl Marx

"You are neurotic and depressed it doesn't mean that you are sad." ~ Everclear

"There must be some things a hot bath won't cure but I don't know many of them." ~ Sylvia Plath

One that's fresh in my mind is Sean Krause [1983-2009] whom I hope to make very proud one day.

I will say this, though: my personal beliefs are not about specific people, places, and things. I believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every person. I believe that we should treat others-- and their opinions and personal convictions-- with respect and compassion. I believe in social justice causes and having a conscience that causes me to question. I believe that nobody possesses the right answer. I believe that it's okay to think critically, question, and explore. I believe in peace and equality. I believe that we should respect our interdependent web.

I wouldn't exactly say he sounds like a nutcase specifically... but lots of parts of the Bible seem like a major acid trip to me. Parting of the seas? Burning bushes? Blood smeared on doors and plagues of locusts? I'll take some of that!

In all seriousness, though... I don't know enough about the Bible to know which, if any, of those things Jesus spoke about. Maybe none of them. I'm no Biblical scholar. But I do think it is very frightening when people take the words of this religious figure so literally. Especially when, as you clearly demonstrate, so much of it is contradictory and hypocritical.
