You're in a plane, and all of a sudden the plane goes down and crashes. You wake up floating in a life boat you don't even know how you got in the first place. You...

Paddle until you find shore. If there's land somewhere, I'll stay there.

Recall the bearing (direction I was headed before I went down. Then make a sun-dial to determine N-S-E-W and paddle slowly the direction I need to go. If I have a cup, and plastic, place the plastic over the cup and let the sun heat it and the condensation will fall into the cup and I will have water

More chances to find something useful for surviving on land.

Unless you see land or a ship, paddling would be a waste of energy

I work in the Gulf of Mexico a death roll in a helicopter is something you don't want to ever experience. If you survive it you will have to survive on water untill you are found.

But then, I'm addicted to all those "Survivor" type shows on Discovery Channel. Of course a never ending supply of duct tape would be greatly appreciated as well.

You can't survive on sea water. If you ingest sea water you will suffer from liver failure, hallucinations, and you will die. Two, why paddle like crazy when you have no idea where you are going? That's just going to wear you out and you likely don't have any provisions, thus sooner death. Three, to die slowly is probably what would happen, but I'm not going to be a helpless victim!

there is plenty of stories in history about people surviving at sea until rescue. The first step to survival is the attitude you take about the situation.

But were that to happen to me. I'd take inventory of all that was on the raft. If available build a sail and go with the wind. Conserve my energy and stay as cool as possible.

You have to assemble a solar still so you can get fresh water from the sea water. A guy on the program "I shouldn't be alive" survived over 70 days at sea because he was lucky enough to have two solar stills, one of which did eventually gave up the ghost. When he was rescued he still had plenty of days worth of jerky meat he'd preserved.
