Young People Having More Unprotected Sex, Know Less About Contraception: Who Is to Blame?

In alarming news for parents everywhere, young people around the world are having more unprotected sex, according to a new survey.

The "Clueless or Clued Up: Your Right to be informed about contraception" study reports that the number of young people having unsafe sex with a new partner increased by 39 percent in the USA, 19 percent in Britain and 111 percent in France in the last three years, according to Reuters.

The survey questioned more than 6,000 young people from 26 countries.

"No matter where you are in the world, barriers exist which prevent teenagers from receiving trustworthy information about sex and contraception, which is probably why myths and misconceptions remain so widespread even today," Denise Keller, a member of the World Contraception Day task force, said in a statement with the results of the study.

World Contraception Day, by the way, is today.

The survey also found that young people today know less rather than more about contraception (which seems bizarre in the age of the Internet, etc.).

"When young people have access to contraceptive information and services, they can make choices that affect every aspect of their lives which is why it's so important that accurate and unbiased information is easily available for young people to obtain," Keller said.

Many of the young people who took the poll also said that they felt too embarrassed to ask a healthcare professional for contraception.

Who do you think is to blame for the rise in unprotected sex among young people?

How many years have we been teaching condoms in the school systems?

    Parents need to be parents.

Children should not be having sex.

Like I said, teens have sex because their human nature drives them to do so. But, if you can't or are unwilling to practice abstinence, you should have knowlege and the means to protect yourself.

I agree with you. Abstinence doesn't work. We are human beings with sexual desires and emotions. To teach abstinence is to go against pre-programmed human behavior. That is like pushing a rope. Parents should be teaching kids that sex is as much an emotional commitment as physical one and to practice safe sex if they do decide to do it....because they will.

    Repressing sexuality is pretty unhealthy.

We're not telling them that they must be abstinent or face the consequences. (Some might, unfortunately, but I try not to). I'm not telling them the suppress their sexual feelings. I'm just advocating them putting it all off until they at least finish getting an education, whether that be high school or college. I prefer until marriage, but if they wait until they finish school, they won't have any unneeded stress to worry about. With sex being put off, they have a chance to find out what they want to be in life, what they want to do after high school, and so on. That's all I'm saying.

Gotcha. But what does sex in and of itself have to do with any of that? Simply because someone has sexual intercourse they wont be able to amount to anything in life? But I think I know what you're talking about. I think you might be suggesting child birth. Well in that case, yes, things do change. But there are ways around child birth, and getting pregnant in the first place.

I mean, especially if someone tries it and just can't get their mind off it, while they're teenagers. It will distract them from learning in school. It could also occur with those who have done it but regret it quicly thereafter. There's nothing wrong with sex per se, it's just people do it just for the pleasure, not always knowing the risks of it. Especially if a girl gets pregnant. That's even more distraction because they have to take care of their unborn kid and not to mention the questions, comments, taunts, w/e from the other kids. I've actually known a couple of people who dropped out of school to support their child. God knows what will happen in their future. Abstinence is the only 100% way to prevent pregnancies, and it's free for all who want to try it.

You make good points. You can teach them about the repercussions that could occur from teen pregnancies and the progress one can achieve from repressing certain sexual urges, but they should also be taught about "safe" sex and that sex is not bad, at any age. In the end it should be the person's choice. I am just against the more extreme (predominantly Christian) Abstinence groups who seek to control the sexuality of others.

Extreme abstinence groups is something I don't support at all. It's just the ones that inform.

And one other point, abstinence is not the only 100% way to prevent pregnancies. Ex. Tubal ligation, aka: Getting your tubes tied. As well as the correct use of condoms.

That makes sense, but then, getting surgery can also have its side effects. If they don't want to give birth to kids, then they can go and do that.

If I may compliment both of us, I think we make somewhat understandable and valid points in our arguments. So I am going to stop myself from going any farther from the post's topic. If you dont mind.

    "Tubal ligation"
wrong, fallopian tubes occasionally reattach over time.

    "correct use of condoms."
wrong condoms tear at times, even when used as directed. If someone is sexually active the risks add up quickly, "women whose partners use male condoms experience a 2% per-year pregnancy rate with perfect use "

Let's say you were married and your spouse asked you to simply abstain from sex for a month, or two, or how about a year...how hard would that be for you? It is the same for them, but worse due to their raging hormones.

HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is EXACTLY the problem with today's younger generation, they refuse to take ACCOUNTABILITY for themselves and always look outward for the reason. THE MAIN REASON they have more unprotected sex (not sure how since protection has only been around a few generations) is because they are irresponsible. Period! The information is out there and it's spread to kids at a real young age. For them to say they are not educated is garbage, pure nonsensical garbage!

Blaming parents is absolutely absurd, except where the parents do not speak with their kids. I know of very, very few who do not have the conversation early on, especially knowing they'll be the ones footing the bill should little John and Jane conceive a child.

To note, I chose school as it relates to the students, not the schools admins or teachers.

:/ I don't know, I've never been taught about how to have safe sex, or pills I should take, or anything, and I'm a Junior in high school. The only way to get the information is the Internet.

Children are the responsibility of the parents...but unfortunately, in our new-age Nanny State society, personal responsibility and accountability are fast becoming a thing of the past. And they call this "progressive"...what an oxymoron!

Perhaps we ought to issue a Child Bearing License with a minimum requirement that one must have at least an IQ of 100 and show proof of gainful employment and have at least a High School Diploma. Dumb, lazy parents are going to breed dumb lazy children...

Let's see...with TV, movies, and really just about any form of advertising being a promotion for sex, why wouldn't kids think about it ALL THE TIME?!?
I am not a prude, by any means, but come on! My mom and I were recently shopping in the mall and walked through the juniors department. She kept commenting on how cute all the little shirts were. I told her “Mom, those are not shirts, they are dresses”. Girls wear stuff to short and WAY too revealing because that is all they are presented with. It’s all they see on TV and in the movies. It’s cool to have sex.
With shows like “The secret life of the American Teenager”, boys and girls see that it’s ok to become a parent when you are still in high-school. That’s just bogus!
I’m not saying we need to go back to the “I Love Lucy” and “The Waltons” kind of shows, but what do you expect kids to be like when they are basically taught that promiscuous behavior is ok? Trust me, it’s not as cool as you think it is.

I would say parents, friends and the media are all huge influences in a teenager's life. The loudest voice in a child's life need to be the parents because they are not the only voice their child is hearing.

It's always down to the parents, you can't blame anyone else! My mum managed to bring me up single-handedly with no father around to know enough about sex and contraception to not get pregnant at 15... why can't more parents do the same??

I only picked Public Health Programs because I think its a community's fault as a whole.
Teenagers have nothing to do so they are going to find their own entertainment.
If you live in the mountains (your kids are drinking in the woods) if you live on the coast (your kids are drinking at the beach) which leads to dumb drunk teens with raging hormones! Sex will ensue.

Does your town have teen dances weekly? NO
Does your town have a supervised placed for teens to go? NO
Towns enforce more where kids can't go then where they can go.
I bet most of the teen pregnances happen in areas of America where kids have nothing to do.

    kids drinking at the beach
People put down churches but at least churches have CYO leagues and after school community groups to keep kids busy.... you know what they say about idle hands.
