I'm supporting my local Mexican community by dining in their fine establishments and getting drunk with them on their day of heritage.

Holidays in remembrance of bloody battles are the best. The fact that it's was a battle of Americans beating on the French makes it all that much better.

I thought it was interesting Cinco De Mayo was listed as an American holiday in www.earthcalendar.net. IOW not as a Mexican day of celebration.

I'm not Mexican so Cinco de Mayo means nothing to me. The "Battle of Puebla", which took place on May 5, 1862, is interesting from a historical standpoint but I don't celebrate that Mexican holiday. I am happy that the Mexican army defeated the French at the town of Puebla or our neighbors to the south of us might be speaking French instead of Mexican.

I believe that the national language of Mexico is español, not "Mexican". I would not mind français, tho. The USA would be sandwiched then between two nations of francophones! LOL Go Quebec!

You're correct. The language is actually Spanish with a Mexican dialect. Much the same as the differences between the US and Australia or UK. We all speak English with a different dialect. Some of the words that those three countries use are the same with different meanings. The same with Mexico and other Latin America countries. Thanks for the correction.

I celebrate Cinco De Mayo, because we should learn about all holidays, and what they mean to us. Cinco De Mayo comes from when Mexico borrowed a lot of money from France. Mexico did not repay it, so France invaded and occupied Mexico. The French made the Austrian Archduke Maximillan into the puppet Emperor of Mexico. After defeating the French in battle, the Mexicans captured Maximillan and executed him. The Empress Carlotta went back to her native Belgium, where she died in an insane asylum. So we learn about our neighbor to the south of us, and that Cinco De Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day, like so many Americans think.

Exactly. Our French Emperor Napoleon III had invaded Mexico at a time when America was busy fighting the Civil War. Some of us here in Paris, notably my local bar, commemorate the Mexican people's victory against foreign imperialists.

It just goes along with Napoleon's Declaration of the Rights of Man. So yes it does go along with French morals and values. They can have a nice celebration in places such as Paris.
