Quantcast

Would you send money to strange people in other countries that tell you sad stories, or promise you a vast fortune without knowing them?

I'm blown away by the sheer number of people that send me e-mails telling me sad stories about how they are stuck in other countries, are will trustees with the final will of one of my distant family members, or people that are looking to borrow money and will fly to see me to pay me back as soon as they can.

If people weren't going for these obvious scams they wouldn't bout there, has anyone you know ever taken the bait on these things?
You!

Its called 419 scamming, or advance fee fraud. I learned about it in my international law class.

The scam started out in Nigeria, and it varies wildly in sophistication. The FBI and Interpol both maintain sites warning people about it, but apparently there are some very gullible people in the world.

Nigeria is the worst for that, it's funny how many e-mails from people in trouble, mysterious trustees, and long lost family member e-mails I have gotten from there now that you say that.

Fun
