Live Action Role Play, or LARP, may be thought of as a life-sized version of Dungeons and Dragons but the activity dates back to Tudor times.

Even Queen Elizabeth I is believed to have been a 'LARPer' who dressed up to play games.

Fantasy dressing up for live action roleplay game

"LARP is something like an improvised play performed with no audience and no script or like living in your own video game", explains Lizzie Stark, the author of the book Leaving Mundania.

Miss Stark, a 30-year-old freelance journalist, spent 18 months playing the fantasy medieval game Knight Realms, which has been going on for years in the woods surrounding Sparta in New Jersey.

To complete her research, Lizzie Stark also went to Scandinavia to experience the "Nordic avant-garde art LARP". These games can be focused on religion, love or even explore themes related to death and addiction.

The BBC escaped the real world to spend a day with goblins, ancient magicians and knights - and to find out what makes people LARP.

What about.. Real life? Though I'm good with both live action roleplaying and video games. It depends who else is around to LARP with, or if I can even be bothered/want to. And video games.. Meh, that also depends if I feel like it. I'd rather make/plant/build/create something most of the time, to be honest. And I've never thought of it as at all similar to being in a video game (honestly, before scrolling down, I didn't have a clue that you even meant LARPing).

LARPing isn't much like "Being in your own video game" really. It's more like full immersion interactive theater.

Honestly, I would love to play Vampire: The Masquerade again or Shadowrun. Even Dungeons and Dragons is fun. Any "pen and paper" role play game where you can really let your imagination go among friends! Having to dress up and play it all out is not my style. It does not afford you the opportunity to narrate as much, and I like to sketch out the story as it progresses. I suppose LARP is a great way to show off and design costumes, though!

I used to play video games all the time but not so much now, in fact, never. If I was "in" a real video game, I'll be taken out almost immediately, I just know it.
