Generally, you die more or less instantly *usually* from being hung. That's why there is a trap door usually and a length of rope not just enough to stretch from the beam above. This gives you a fall, the force from the fall and the sudden stop is usually enough to break the neck and insta-death.

Of course, I prefer a little more certainty >.>
