Many don't, but it is some handy money if you keep finding some.

we pick up the change on the ground whenever we're walking. We put it in a special bank and donate all the money we find to the Salvation Army at Christmas. Last year it was over $60

Of course. free money is free money.

I will tell you a funny story from a "few" years ago. I was working in a local mall and we would have long hours sometimes with very little business and too much energy. One of the ideas we came up with to pass the time was to superglue a quarter on the floor and then watch people TRY to pick it up. You should have seen the hilarious the looks on folks faces when they couldn't pick it up. One old guy looked around, dug a pocket knife out and started chipping at the floor!! He was kind of embarrassed when I went out into the mall and said "Pssst Sir, I think someone superglued that down." He said "oh." and walked off head down. It was so funny... I still think of that when I bend down to pick up a coin.

I think they should stop making the penny, and round everything to the nearest nickel.

When I was in the army in Germany they did. No pennies were sent there. We had some in circulation because of what people got there with, but they were happy to round off.

Ha. I had no problem when I was in the Canadian Military in Germany(late 70's). We used German currency on the Canadian bases. In Germany you had those 1 and 2 Pfennig coins that's even lower than a penny.
Hell I still picked them up as I said elsewhere money is money.

I was in Berlin then. I loved pfennigs...lol.... the candy imbis down the street took them!

When I was in and back in Germany in the mid 80s what we discovered was if you were desperate the 1 mark coins worked as quarters in the coke machines...too bad the quarters did not work in the beer machines!! LOL.

God I miss those beer machines. We had them in the barracks.
Actually I miss Germany. Bierfests, Winefests, Volksmarches, the Beer, the wine, the food, the castles.

Amen nightcrawler... you should have seen the face of the McDonalds girl my first order back stateside! She said "We don't seeerrrve beer (with the contempt just dripping) at McDonalds". It was only slightly better than when I said "Yes they do just not in the United States."

But it was good times for sure!! Where were you stationed? I was in Bad Krueznach when I was in, and Berlin as a brat.

I was stationed at Lahr. That's about half way between Offenburg and Freiburg on the Rhine.
Nothing beats sitting on a deck chair on the Rhine cruise with a beer in your hand watching the castles go by on a warm day.

When I got back to Canada everything seemed so boring and slow. There was always something going on over there.

Rhine is pretty, but the Bavarian area was my fave.

You must not be in Toronto. Used to be lots going on there. My Mom was from Toronto so we would go summers....

Other side of the country. I live just outside Vancouver. Beautiful area but with the mountains your limited on the size of the built up area. I think greater Vancouver has around 2.5 million. Yes there's festivals and events but nowhere near the amount as over their.
Also I love history and its hard trying to explain to someone that thinks 90 year old logging railway tracks is history when you've seen 1000 year old castles and 2000 year old Roman ruins.
Lastly I find too many North Americans just can't handle their beer. If you ever tried to hold a proper beer or wine fest it would probably break out into fights.
