What started out as a silly little idea has blown into a viral sensation -- and one that people are actually testing out. "Phone stacking" isn't your average internet meme. It's actually a really cool concept. And it's for people who are a little too attached to their phones.

This is how it works: before a dinner with friends or family (or any event where real-life social interaction is suggested), people stack their phones one-by-one on top of each other. Then, they do the unthinkable: continue on with their lives as if the electronic device isn't even there. If they hear a sound indicating a text message, they ignore it. If they hear their phone ringing, they simply pretend they don't. And then they carry on with their dinner.

But here's the catch: whoever can't bare the thought of overlooking their latest text and ends up caving by grabbing for their phone, loses. And then they have to pay the bill for dinner, or buy a round of drinks for everyone, or...well, you get the idea. So, what do you think? Is phone stacking a cool idea -- or is it just another pointless game that somehow got popular?

    I wouldn't call it cool to stack the phones, but ignoring the cell phones during dinner is not lame -- it's polite. It's rude to be texting and having phone conversations while at dinner with others. A call should not be taken unless it's very important.

    Not necessarily a "cool concept" but I don't think it's lame. I just think it's a fun way to test your friends. Not like people are obsessing about it the whole time, it's just a chance for a little fun if people think of it that way.
    No need to get so serious about it, people. It's trivial! It's not like this one little thing means all people with cell phones are ignorant, self-obsessed losers...

    But then again, I'm not addicted to my phone and I've disabled testing, so I would most likely never pay for a meal again as long as the fad stays popular.

    I think its good people are making a conscientious effort to put their cyber-lives to one side and interact with the real world. It's so annoying to be out with someone but know you dont have their full attention, and have them constantly pick up their phone and text people or whatever!

    So instead of texting or talking on the phone...they obsess over it and talk ABOUT IT all through dinner. UGH. Just leave it in the car for the dinner. If the people you are with aren't important enough to spend uninterrupted time with...keep yourself AND YOUR phone at home! IMHO! no cell phones

    Well, I'm old enough to remember a time when cell phones didn't exist. Back when you had an answering machine, and you'd never answer a call before, screening it first, and if they hung up, too bad. Then came caller I.D. So yeah, not responding to a phone ring immediately is something I have a LOT of experience with. I'd win every single time.

    that would be nice to try with the exception of important calls. gets on my nerves when some one i take out is on the phone the whole time while i have done it before it was because some thing serious was happening

    I almost clicked no, but then I read the story, and I think it's pretty damn cool. Most of America are so attached to their electronic devices nowadays, it's like no one knows how to be social anymore.

    Too bad I don't get that many calls and texts, though. Really, the only thing I'm addicted to is Words With Friends.
