NO WAY! I don't want to become a human scratching post! besides, i love my kitty too much to force her on a leash!

I totally tried to leash train our cat. He reacted exactly the same way as the cat in the picture. Poor kitty.

Actually our first Siamese was lead-trained.... trick is you have to get used to a collar and then the leash when they are tiny kittens!

I've tried it in the past with the results you have in your picture. They act like I've just tried to kill them or even worse....

HOWEVER.....I have a pure bred Chocolate Point Balinese that was given to me for my 25th Wedding Anniversary. These cats are known to have a lot of "dog like" behaviors. This kitty was chewing on my metal table in my breakfast nook and chewing metal leaves right off, she was chewing on a ceramic cat decoration I have, in curiosity I decided to see how she would behave on a leash to "re-focus" her attentions outward (I won't let her outside to roam on her own because she was a $1,200.00 cat) and she took right to it! She was about 8 months old at the time. Now when I tell her to go get her leash so that we can go for a walk, she runs, gets her leash and pulls it off the table that it sits on.

Here is a picture of Xandi

That all being said. I HAVE seen other cats of other breeds who would walk on a leash. And when I say walk on a leash, what I mean is THEY walk YOU on their leash. Even my cat doesn't typically go where I would like her to go, she just drags me around where SHE wants to go. I take her camping and walk her around, other cars, people, dogs, weather...nothing bothers her.

Start as soon as possible. Have your kitty used to a collar, then put them in to the harness and let them get used to that. Hold your kitty and take it outside and walk around, it he/she?
will start getting used to being outside and want to explore, then I'd just use a piece of light weight twine and tie it on to the harness...sometimes I think the weight of the clip against their shoulders is what can kind of freaks them out. It doesn't bother my cat, as she knows when she feels that weight, she gets to go outside. When we go camping, I put a piece of twine on her with a longer lead so she can explore around without me being there with her constantly. It's still a chore, as I have to chase the twine around all the spots that she's crossed and tied it up in to knots. =-/

Some cats can be leash trained. My neighbor had one who was. All mine are far too independent at this point to do that. Would need to start when they are pretty young.

when I take my cat for a walk, we typically end up walking where SHE wants to go, I can't get her to work with me to walk where I want to go. What is the secret??

i always take both my cat and dog at the sametime. As long as Angel (my dog) starts we are all good, my cat will follow her. But to just take my cat. NOPE. Same thing it will be where he wants to go lol. He has done great though. Took time for real. almost two years. I have never walked him with out the dog how ever.

that is facinating!!! I had goats I could walk that way. The one goat would only cooperate as long as the other goat was walking and leading. It wears their hoofs down so there is less hoof maintence. =-/

my mother-in-law had pigmy goats for pets and said the same thing. Two little things so sweet. She would walk them every night for the very same reason.

Goats are fun, good for weed control, but goats are also very.... well....stubborn... LOL!! My husband put a pigmy in with our full size goats once, it didn't work out, the pigmy could never get to the food before the other goats ate it up, so it went back to it's other home. The weeds would be so high, you couldn't even see the wee goat... =-)

The whole joy of a cat is its free spirit.
People seem to be treating them like the next step from a ferbie. They arent toys.

I tried a few times and my cat prefer to walk where she wants to walk and try and pull me. So I do have one, but I only use it when I visit my parents and let my cat explore their massive back yard with me watching of course.

Nope. Leashes are useless in cat training. Rewarding with food treats is extremely effective, even with kittens.

I think I am going to stir the pot have some fun with this one. Yes, my cats will walk on a leash. But they do it veeerrryyy slowly. Cats like women are trainable. It takes love, patience... And a squirt bottle. Works on dogs as well...

my cat took to it immediately. I put the harness on her, and she couldn't get out the door to explore fast enough. Now when I'm ready to take her for a walk, I tell her to go get her leash, and she goes looking for it and will knock it off the table where it sits.

Some cats do things naturally if they like them. My now deceased little black buddy Jazz would actually play fetch is you threw his toy. About three fetches was usually all he was interested in though. ;-)

Yeah, my Balinese kitty loves to play fetch, and her favorite toy is a two foot long stick that she loves to drag around the house and play fetch with. But Balinese are known to have a lot of "dog like" atributes.
