I do not agree with the saying " once a cheat always a cheat" I look at it that maybe the person just has not found the right person that they want to really be with, yes feelings get hurt but I feel it is no different then breaking up with them.

It depends. Some spouses have retracted from intimacy. And the remaining spouse instead of ditching on them finds intimacy elsewhere. It's never a black and white situation.

Then get a divorce, change your relationship, but cheating is cheating. That, really, is pretty black and white.
if you cannot be upfront about what you are doing, you need to look at that, not make an excuse.

I have. Both my husbands had far from stellar records on faithfulness They knew all too clearly who they were dealing with me. Was never an issue.

Considering the fact that a person's fidelity is not usually something you find out about until you start thinking in terms of a more serious relationship, and considering that fact that 50% plus are admitted cheaters in todays society, I would say most have at least dated a cheater or two and not even known.
