I would and have done both. I am an avid Doberman lover and bought my first pup when I was 20, but working in vet med, I have adopted from shelters and rescued more than I can count when owners opted to euthanize instead of put effort into their pet!
There are so many terrific animals who've been abandoned and need love and care. I've found 2, taken a free one from a litter, gotten 2 from shelters, and my daughter brought one home from college that was going to be abandoned by his owner. I've loved them all, miss the ones who are gone, and am looking at #6 sacked out at my feet right now.
I wouldn't trade them for all the AKC "Best in Show" dogs you offered me.
It depends if im looking for a purebred or not and also what im looking for. 9/10 im going to go to a shelter for a pet but theres an exception to every rule. I support breeders just not backyard idiots who are trying to make a quick buck and dont really know or care what their doing.
Our dog we have now came from a lab rescue. He's an incredibly good dog. So much to the point where we use him as a therapy dog at a convalescent center and the local VA.
If I didn't have a (beautiful saint) dog, I would adopt one from an animal shelters. Pure breed dogs get sick easily, need lots of care and can get better places to live since their condition.
I'm irresponsible because I went to a breeder? We wanted a chocolate lab we wanted good breeding as to not have problems associated with the breed. We neutered, licensed, and do regular breeder check-ups. How am I selfish and irresponsible?
It's just my opinion. I will never do that as long as animals are dying on the streets and in shelters everyday. Sorry you are offended, but it isn't my problem. I do not agree with breeding, and I refuse to support it.
