Slapstick is visual. Men are supposedly more visual than women. I suppose that is why they appeal more to men than women.

Maybe it is cultural, too. Like men aren't supposed to show their feminine side (if they have one), women aren't supposed to show they appreciate slapstick.

There is also an age component. While funny is funny, a lot of their gags were subtle slams on people and events of the time. Not many are old enough to remember what those times were like and therefore able to grasp the full humor!
