I'll buy that. Plus taking digs at the nobility and then saying "... but that was about the: (a. Danes, b. Scots, c. Italians, d. French e. Spanish; pick one or more as needed), not our fine British royals and nobles." Yeah, right! Any resemblance to actual events was purely coincidental, I'm sure.

He wrote for the masses. Were he living today, he would be writing police drama and political drama. Can you imagine The Manchurian Candidate as a Shakespearean tragedy? Actually, in a way it was.

I adore the writing of Shakespeare. Hmmm....which is my favorite? I really like Othello, but it would probably have to be Hamlet or MacBeth. How about you?

His contemporaries were also talented writers but Shakespeare contributed so significantly to the English language with his creative use of words and his actual invention of words.

Not really fair for me to judge I mean who do
know? However the man has infiltrated our culture. I was with a couple of black inner city folk who generally quote rappers but when I said Thou Dost protest too much the reference was immediately recognized. I would guess only the Bible has been more influential in Western Culture and regarding world culture I would be interested in a ranking.

If you've ever seen movies like Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story, Dangerous Liasons, Hamlet, Othello, Much Ado About Nothing, they're all based on Shakespeare's plays. Some are modernized, some aren't. But his stories are beautifully told and are fully of suspense, love, mystery, and action. If you want a good mystery, read Hamlet, Othello, The Merchant of Venice, or MacBeth. Hamlet in particular is a real nail biter!

A Midsummer Night's Dream is more of a twisted sort of love story than the others, but it's beautiful. Merchant of Venice I read my freshman year of high school and that story just stuck with me, it was so WRONG! He has to pay back his debt in the form of a pound of flesh. If you think about it, back then there really was no way to pay that back without dying. Lots of metaphors, but a good story nonetheless.

Yes. MacBeth is neat too because the arch nemesis was told that only a man not born of a woman could kill him, so of course he thinks he's invincible and he is like a tyrant. Then here comes MacBeth who was not born from his mother, she died before he was born and he was removed early, so he fullfilled the prophecy and killed the bad guy. Geez, it's been so long since I read that, I need to reread it soon!!! It's an awesome story.
