Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher says he plans to stay off the sidelines. Dont' tell the NFL that, as the Miami Dolphins (who just fired head coach Tony Sparano), Kansas City Chiefs (fired Todd Haley), Jacksonville Jaguars (fired Jack Del Rio), among other teams are set to make a run at Cowher's services -- assuming they haven't already. Though, one NFL legend and colleague of Cowher believes he won't be coaching in 2012.
“I would love to see him be the Dolphins coach or if he wanted to coach again because it would be great for the NFL, but I don’t think his mindset is that he wants to coach again,” said former Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino to Dolphins.com, according to ProFootballTalk.com. The Dolphins have been inconsistent since Marino's retirement before the 2000 season, having flashes of success one season, only for it to disappear the next. Cowher would not only change the Dolphins locker room to a winning culture, but also bring the proven ability to mentor a quarterback for the team's future. He mentored and developed successful NFL quarterbacks like Kordell Stewart and Ben Roethlisberger during his Pittsburgh tenure.
“He may change that over time now, but my feeling is that, you know, he’s a pretty straightforward . . . guy that tells the — kind of — the truth most of the time," Marino said. "I would say — or no, all the time — and he said on TV that he doesn’t have any plans of coming back, and I believe him.”
Cowher hasn't coached since 2006, stepping down from the Steelers head coaching position in January 2007 with an overall coach record of 149–90–1, numerous playoff appearances, and one Super Bowl title in 2005. He has since served as an analyst for CBS' Sunday NFL coverage.
